yes and no but i think not much 3870 CF is around 1 4850 power. My 3700+ @ 2.8ghz bottlenecks 4850 but not much but since you have a dual core and its @ 3.0ghz you should have no problem.

I did not think that you could Crossfire ATI cards from different generations?

Crossfire setup with work with any crossfire capable card irc, such as 3870 with a 4870. BUT, in X-fire mode the 4870 will "dumb" itself down per-say to equal the performance of the 3870.
