Iam very particular about noise, I like my rig as silent as humanly possible

So wondering if adding another 580 into the mix would double the idle noise? Load noise not much of a concern cos then the game sounds will overwhelm anything.

Thanks

rocklobsta is right you wont double the noise by adding another card however one thing to think about is if there going to be sanwiched together the top card will need to run at a higher fan speed to keep temps down due to being starved of air

You would need to be worried if you wanted to add a second 6990

580's run cool, you could get away with lower fan speeds in exchange for slightly higher temps, but no, it won't double. If anything, it will sound the same, unless you sandwich them right next to each other.

Decibels is a logarithmic scale not linear every 3db increase is a double in power. 200 watts of sound will be 3db louder than 100 watts of sound.. Does that explain it a little.

since your technically doubling the power i would expect a ~3db increase of sound...
Now since you have logarithmic hearing as well you would need approx 10db increase in sound to "sense" a doubling of sound...
a 90db sound feels twice as loud as a 80db sound

by the time i typed that 3 other responses...

Your board has the 2nd pcie slot double spaced. If you add another 580, there shouldn't be a noticeable heat increase or noise due to the card spacing.

2 GTX 580's could actually run quieter than a GTX 580. According to Sadsoul's sig, his GTX 580 is overclocked and probably loud due to high fan speed.

With dual-580's, you can downvolt and downclock both cards, while still getting plenty of performance.

My GTX 580 is almost inaudible at less than 70% fan speed. 2 GTX 580's with fan speed less than 70% may acutally be quieter than 1 GTX 580 at 85% fan speed. The key is to undervolt and underclock both cards ... just like on the GTX 590 and reduce fan speed as much as safely possible.

Can you actually hear your GTX 580's fan when idle? What is the idle fan speed? 40%?
