The XFX Ati cards are way overpriced imo.

This card has a better cooler + higher clocks + much cheaper:

The stock core clock is also 815mhz.

XFX has a higher price for a reason thier warranty is unbeatable and thier cards just dont seem to die

ASUS on the other hand has one of the worst rated rma services and a rather high failure rate

i have rma'd 2 asus products in the past 6 months one being a 780i mobo which has been gone for almost 3 weeks now and a 790fx board for a friend which was shipped out thanksgiving of last year asus lost the board and he just got it back 2 weeks ago THAT IS REDICULOUS oh and guess what it arrived defective

the one and only RMA i have ever done for xfx is when i was aiming for 1ghz on my 8600gt and got extremely happy with the voltmods and fried the vrms and i told them it was modded sent the card in with the mods still in place and was told i might want to be more careful in the future and given a new card

now you tell me XFX isnt worth the premium

True, but how long do you keep a card? 1-2 years? Exactly. You don't really need more warranty. Well that's just my reasoning anyway. Besides with a better cooler it will last longer.

Also you don't presume every card you buy is going to break

a few points i forgot to mention

1. you pointed out a card with half the memory

2. the double lifetime warranty offered by xfx boosts resale by offering the second buyer the same excellent warranty

3. if im not mistaken (and i might be as i dont own a 4870 myself) but every review i have read on 4870s as of late has had them going to ~810mhz on auto tune so you should be absolutely fine as far as 800 is concerned you dont even have to try you press a button in CCC

i will say though that the cooler is better on the asus but your temps will be well within spec on the XFX even with that mild oc

but the drawback of the asus cooler design is that the hot air is merely recirculated in your case where as the XFX exhausts it so the temps should be close

EDIT: you also mentioned memory overclock capabilities all 4870s (90% sure) ship with 4ghz rated Qimonda ddr5 memory modules so you have quite a bit of memory overclocking

hmm i see i would agree 100% that the extra memory wouldnt matter at the resolutions on that screen but if he ever does want to get a larger display or if he just wants more memory for games, especially the stupid way rockstar set up GTA4 you cant run max settings on less than 1gb of memory even if you have a blazing fast gpu

but as far as off topic i think warranties service and quality are half of the buying game so i thought we were sticking to the conversation as i hope a fellow OCN member would advise me of a poor purchase im sorry if i seemed to stray from the question at hand

LOL not really a fight im just argumentative i could argue with a rock (and infact have argued with one on several occasions but lets not go there)

but having poked around some more i will say that the reference cooler on the xfx should have its thermal paste changed to something good like IC7 or if you must as5 as these cards are really hot natured no matter the cooler but a common problem with the stock cooler which i dont know if xfx has addressed is the stock fan speeds are very slow and have the card run hot so changing the fan profile in CCC is a must and then it runs rather cool as it can finally get proper airflow and its not in your case
