I personally think that's cutting it a little close, but the author of this article seems to think the Atom & 9400M are up to the task.

Do you have any ideas for something more powerful. I'm looking for a sub 600 HTPC for 1080P.

What if anything attracted you to that board for a HTPC ? I could suggest 1,000 other boards with more expansion and on board features however, the 1080p will be a result of your video/cpu + monitor so I ask what kind of monitor/tv do you have and what type of CPU/GPU do you plan on getting. Oh and that board only supports the Atom chip :| which is like a gameboy ;p
Any amd 785 mb with the onboard 4200 should be very capable of hd content. Pair it up with an athlon II and you'll be set. Something like this will work.

I have 65 inch 1080P TV which I will be using as my monitor. I'm not set on a GPU and CPU just the minimum needed to play 1080P movies with ease.

Incorrect link. That's your saved wishlist.
Corrected links:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=11426265
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Pu...umber=11425405

those two builds are pretty different. Why did you jump to the AMD Regor 245 over the 240? Why did you add in a high end GPU from no GPU?

Relook at my last post, I posted the correct links and followed up with a question.
If you don't actually need it to be small, you're better off going with mATX. And since you've got a 65" TV I'm assuming you have a pretty nice surround system to go along with it, so you'll definitely want to add a Xonar card to the build. Onboard sound is lacking in many areas, and doesn't even match up to the quality of standard bluray players.

I still can't justify $150 for a sound card... what about bitstreaming through the 5xxx card and letting the receiver do the work?

$150?? More like $70.

Bitstreaming works, but can you guarantee that every codec you use on the PC is decodable by the receiver? Because unless you're playing only actual DVDs and Blurays you'll end up with lots of trouble getting it to work.

Didn't know about that one. Most people I see adding Xonar's to their newegg cart has the $150 model. That's what I paid for my XtremeMusic a few years ago.

Well there are a bunch of them....D1/D1X, D2/D2X, HDAV 1.3 Slim/Deluxe, and Essence STX. Each one has its perks - the D1 and D2 are basic sound cards (the D2 better of course), the HDAV's have HDMI passthrough and the deluxe has RCA preouts for analog connections too, and the Essence STX has a built-in headphone amp. All this obviously translates to different components on each of the cards, but at the end of the day they all sound great.

Most people go with the HDAV for an HTPC because of the HDMI output and because it does sound better than the D1. But if you don't want to pay that much the D1 is still like night and day compared to onboard, and is still even better than Creative cards. And this is coming from a guy who paid $170 for his X-Fi Platinum before hearing a Xonar.
