I'm trying to play a simple avi file. Until today, I've had no problems.

Now, however, double clicking (default software is vlc), pressing 'Enter' and right clicking on the file > open with or > play etc produce no result.

I've tried different software (VLC, WMP) and none of them play the file.

It's not just this file. I've tried it with a couple of others which I know work.

Any ideas?

I've had problem like this happen to me a few times, restarting my PC is always enough. I don't really know what could cause this (I have a few ideas), and I'm not sure this is the same thing either.

Have you tried to rename your file? Also check your computer for viruses.

I hadn't tried renaming the file. I have now but it didn't work.

Restarting did.

PC's clean. Virus free.

What are your ideas 15130?

Try to install media player classic from scratch with the codec's again.

Sounds like to it's just a simple file association problem.
1) Rick click on the AVI file
2) Click Open with
3) Click "Open Default Program..."
4) Choose VLC Lan.

If it's already set to VLC Lan, change to another program. Click OK or Apply.
Once you're back at the folder view, repeat the steps and change it back to VLC Lan, it's probably a corrupt registry key.

Now test it out by double-clicking on the AVI file - if itdoes not start to play automatically, there's another option but it involves a registry tweak.

^I doubt thats just it, op said that no software would launch whenever he would click on it, and if no program was associated with AVI file there should be a windows asking what to do, no reaction at all is unusuall.

I've personally encountered this issue a few times after a fresh OS install, I think it might just be issues due to some software or drivers installation (or reconfiguration, could also be codecs) that confuses Windows, problems like these (that just fixes themselves just by rebooting) are not that weird, but scanning your PC was a good precaution.

If you like to observe the inners workings of Windows you can have a look with Processmonitor (by Sysinternals) whenever you have such issues, it might give you some good infos.

Yes it is unusual. However, in my experience in dealing with these types of problems in Windows, it is often caused by a incorrect file association or a corrupt registry key setting. There is no harm in trying it out - takes literally 10-15 seconds to see if it works or not.

*touch wood* since de-associating and reassociating *.avi files with vlc player I haven't had the same problem.

I also did a reg cleanup with CCleaner (couldn't hurt).

I'm pretty lazy with turning my PC off and on again - I usually hibernate it. After a clean install and installing various software (Office, CS6), drivers, games + Direct X etc, I usually don't bother rebooting the PC when it asks, I try to remember to do it later. I guess it could have been any number of things.
