Hi everyone.

I've just finished backing up my stuff to all sorts of hard drives, so that I can fully format my main 500gb hard drive and create a nice fresh windows installation.

Can you guys, in the next 20 minutes, give me some advice on my options?

Such as

a) Install as per normal and just go with the flow install.
b) Partition off a smaller volume (80Gb~) for OS only, change registry to use the larger volume for defualt install paths etc
c) Any other popular effective installation types

This is because I was going to grab myself an SSD, but won't be able to for another few months now

Let me know what you all come up with / use yourselves

I would just go with a 500GB normal partition and typical clean install options. When you get your SSD, all you'll have to do is re-format the HDD and use it for storage.

If your BIOS has an AHCI option for the SATA controller, enable that before you reinstall.

mmm... I had it set up as the partition for OS, and I think its a little more trouble than its worth

Just install the regular way, don't need a second partition. When you buy the SSD, install the OS there and use the Properties -> Location option to move you videos/music/pics/downloads, NOT a registry tweak.
It's all there, already integrated in 7

It's generally a bit faster than standard SATA/IDE mode. Most SSD's will benefit significantly from enabling AHCI, and hard drives as well, to a lesser degree.

I have ran AHCI and short stroked both drives. 1 for OS and other for games. Try it. I had 2 500GB's. I did 100GB for OS and 60GB for the games. Access times where very low and far better fps and level loading in games. AHCI just allows both hard drives to run along side each other without interfearing woth each other, that's all
