I see a lot of people asking in the 'Post Your Desktop' on how people have set up their desktops. Now in the majority of cases, this is done with a combination of Rainmeter and Rocketdock, this guide/tutorial will teach you how to configure both of these programs to get your desired look.

Step 1 : What I used and what you need

The steps in this tutorial are carried out on my laptop, with Windows 7 (64Bit) Home Premium. Before you start, you'll need the following programs/items

-Rocketdock
-Rainmeter
-Windows 7 Start Button Changer

And to give everyone an idea, here is what i started with :

4375AE749BEF4F13BC66FC06F0FEAEB5-0000332193-0002121069-00800L-8446902F70C54769A6602B3EAD05A2F1.png

Plain, simple....boring !

Step 2 : Starting Customisation :

I find having the taskbar up the top is nicer, personal preference is all. Download and install Rocketdock. Once it is installed, you'll need to run it from your start menu.

310E179D0C4A481B8B4DDEE05C58E1C3-0000332193-0002121073-00800L-384C0AB8500B44049C5B0990A05F6FAF.png

You'll notice, it pops up over the taskbar, lets fix that, right click on the dock and you'll get a menu the same as this :
E876A6482D414F529BDE95525677A675-0000332193-0002121072-00800L-E2EBDDA92913478FA077549B69E0E0C0.png

We'll leave Rocketdock alone for the moment and now lets download and install Rainmeter ! Download it and run the installer :
490210577D024F26BF38E7360C90419D-0000332193-0002121082-00800L-AB4F2D67C9D84C5A92C3D2D8EA402C2B.png

Rainmeter (like Rocketdock) comes with a basic default skin and that looks like this :
769D1C7CB3E442B38D63B25A41523319-0000332193-0002121074-00800L-D35247347DDD474A90D6344E0D563AF7.png

You can also see the default rocketdock running there aswell.

*Stop here and experiment with settings in Rainmeter and Rocketdock if you wish*

Step 3 : Rejuvenating Rainmeter

Okay, while the standard skin is well and good, everyone wants to make their desktop unique, and for this, you need a new skin for Rainmeter and for the purpose of this guide I am going to use the very powerful Omnimo 3 skin (which you can DL from DeviantArt).
CD8BAA2D6871434F81F35F910716FA98-0000332193-0002121070-00800L-C558EBCF3B2E47EA91B80255B9B442CB.png

Once downloaded, click on the Omnimo Skin file (highlighted in the pic) and it will extract itself.
9A19C20A022F411094F22A7926DD8ACF-0000332193-0002121084-00800L-F2B7849B2DAD41CF9F2EC9D569CBC933.png

Once its done that, you have to run through a very simple setup.
DDD1196B9654419282119FDF1244FAEC-0000332193-0002121079-00800L-727B23BD612C488EB90C8E14C6596B77.png

Annnddd, once its done that, your left with :
EC14795E38C94F9996DBE94B994EC972-0000332193-0002121080-00800L-EA70D0C54B0049AEA925F412CDC4B4EF.png

Now that is a very crowded screen, which no one wants, so lets get to customising Omnimo. This is very easy, right clicking anywhere on the Rainmeter icons will bring up a menu, there is a plethora of options
100240F2F7E3454582E5BAAC1774CB4B-0000332193-0002121064-00800L-F6690683118F4B0F8E4B5B88B7D566FC.png

And to delete any currently displayed panels, scroll over the top right hand side of a panel and there is a small 'X', click it.

*Configure it to your own taste now*

For inspiration, here is mine done very hastily (about 2 mins work)
56DA7CB8D30B437D9B5FC19E1EBBCB09-0000332193-0002121083-00800L-D0AF2A7E6E9846709B2B24094441C4E0.png

That photo leads me nicely onto the Rocketdock customisation part of this guide.

The Icons that Rocketdock uses as standard are hardly gonna fit in with any theme, so lets change them ( I only did 3, but its a rinse and repeat process for as many icons as you want). First thing you want to do is download some new images for your icons, again, I used deviantart for my icons (you can see them to the right hand side)
56DA7CB8D30B437D9B5FC19E1EBBCB09-0000332193-0002121083-00800L-D0AF2A7E6E9846709B2B24094441C4E0.png

To change an icon, right click in as shown above and select the icon settings option.

That will bring up this screen, where you will select where your new icon is :

Select 'Ok' when done to apply your settings. Rinse and repeat until all your icons are skinned.

You should come out with something like this :
85AEAF3908654BFA95114B3516E6E321-0000332193-0002121065-00800L-C0678AF97AED422B800C095DF9DE2F84.png

Next thing is get rid of that nasty border around the icons, right click on the dock and click settings, go to style and select 'Opacity - 0%'
28543C48F4B3440E95CC7DCAF81113E4-0000332193-0002121063-00800L-F276EFD3A2A1402E84ECE93574AF63C1.png

You can see that I increased the font of the icons also, you can skin the dock also but this is something that ill cover in at a later time.

Step 4 : Final Changes

The last step is optional, and it involves changing the 'start orb'
81008A34694B4CE4ABC9F11435D9693E-0000332193-0002121066-00800L-359A5F5DE47D4B69822FF60F2648C25F.png

Download the Windows Start Button Changer and run it as an admin, follow the instructions to change your start icon, I used deviantart for my icon.

Step 5 : Step back and admire your work !

EE9D7E4CBA6E4DD8B7505A44B1A6DD01-0000332193-0002121086-00800L-58B3671657414905B0866F203275690C.png

Once your done, you should have something like this, theres plenty more you can do but I just wanted to keep it simple.

Hopefully this guide helped you out, if your still unclear about anything, feel free to ask and I'll do my best my to help.

Guide is still a WIP, more advanced steps to be added later, and I'll clean up what I've already done also.

I must admit, omnimo isnt my favourite style either, but its the easiest one for a beginner to use, I'm gonna cover some other various themes and other stuff when I've a chance to revise the thread

A lot of people like to get rid of the task bar (or autohide it) for a little more screen space. As well as...
