Hey guys, I know that there are a million and one possibilities especially with hardware combinations that this issue could be happening, but I figured I would take a shot in the dark and see if maybe someone has some experience in this area. No matter what version of windows I am running if I restart the computer, this includes via the start button, windows update, if a program wants to restart, whatever, the computer will act as if it will restart meaning that windows will go away but then the computer just hangs with the fans on and the disk drive light flashes infinitely until I hold the power button and restart. Everything starts up fine after and the computer will shut off just fine if I select shut down. This has been happening probably the past 3 months and the computer is about 7-8 years old. What do you guys think?

Specs are:
Intel DX38BT
Q8400 overclocked to 3.2 GHz (Q9450 coming in the mail shortly)
8GB DDR3
GTX 590

Which OS are you on? do you mean multiple version of windows i.e. home/professional/enterprise or do you mean Windows 10/8/7?
Make sure all updates are installed and update your BIOS as well. Next time it hangs have a look in task manager and see if theres anything abnormal...
check the running services as well start->run->services.msc

Thanks for the reply. I am currently running 7 ultimate. The problem persists if I swap to my windows 10 hard drive. BIOS is up to date the newest one came out about 6 years ago.

1) How many stick of RAM do you have? If it's 2x4gb remove the other one.

2) Turn off the overclock.

See if the problem occurs after this.

As a third option both to safe mode and reproduce the issue you were getting. if it does not happen in safe mode that means something in the startup programs is causing this issue you're descrbing.
