I helped a friend update a P4 3.0ghz running XP SP3... because he experienced a similar problem,
although maybe a little different....
He told me that he cancelled the update part way through, because it was taking so long to install.... he also said that although it went into the cancel routine, that also got stuck.
Everytime he started windows, he was prompted to install the update (updates are ready to be installed)... with the same results...
After prying it out of him, I found out that he didn't wait for the .net update to completely cancel, and but instead Ctl-Alt-Del and ended windows update.
When I got to his house, .net 3.5 was shown as having been installed in add-remove programs, but windows update kept offering it. It couldn't be removed from add/remove... because it didn't exist in it's entirety and the uninstall routine would fail.
After messing around with it for a while... I finally emptied his temp files (where the update still was)... rebooted... ran windows update... this caused windows update to have to re-download the update, rather than update from the files in the temp directory... after hanging around about a half hour... I left and tiold him just to let it run a while... 2 hours later he called me and told me the update finally completed succesfully...
go figure...
On my vista installation...I don't think it took more than 10 minutes... but maybe it was longer
