I had to do the same thing and no dell does not give you a windows disc. Her PC probably has a recovery partition on her hard drive which restores the PC to the brand new state that it was shipped in. You will have to do a search on dells website on how to do this if it is available on her PC, it was available on my dell bought in 2005. You have to hold certain keys while it posts to access the option.

I also wanted my CD so i emailed their support asking for a new windows XP CD and i got a reply the very next day saying he had already sent me a CD in the mail and it arrived in only two days, so it was not just normal mail, they rushed it. he also linked me to any drivers i may need after the new install. It Was shocking how helpful they were especially when my Dell was LONG out of warranty.

Oh and the windows CD key will be on a sticker located on the top of her computer on the back near the power supply. if its not there scan all exterior surfaces for the key.

You want to reinstall XP and find your mom's XP key to do so?

Did she lock it up for a good reason in the first place?

Exactly.
I did the same thing with my brother in laws computer when I replaced his HDD. Just get on Dell's site, entered the serial number (on a sticker on the back of the machine) and request a new disk.

If you used somebody elses disk, it would have to be an OEM disk, and the same version (Home or Pro), otherwise her key will not work.
