Ok, so i got a FX-55 from the egg when they had em for $140, so now i'm getting ready to OC it. anyway, here's been my problems so far:

1) The chip I got has an opty stepping... nothing horrible, but i believe it has that stepping because it is a 130 nm chip (not 90 nm).
2) I read up on the chip and the 130 nm version says it vcore normal is 1.5V...anyone know what's normal for 130's?
3) I have the chip in and am messing w/ the overclocking and the multipliers... i see it goes from like 4 all the way to 25 makes me happy, but the only multipliers that the computer will post with are 12, 13, and 14

so questions:

i'm running air BT w/ silverstone... what should i keep the voltage at or around?

didn't they stop making 130 nm chips?

finally, any reasons why i can't go down below 12 multi?

Thanks

It is definitely a san diego core, not a clawhammer. 1.35/1.4 volts. It is odd that FX's started showing up with opteron steppings (like yours and mine), but I don't think it will affect overclocking much (because the CABNE's are SWEET overclockers)

You can go up to 1.55 with that BT but make sure temps are under 55C. Download CPUz and see what the nm is, it should be 90.

If you have Opty steppings then they were probably defective Opteron 185s with 1 core disabled.

...ok, so you don't believe me... i don't blame you, i don't believe my self either anyway... here's a pic of CPU-z with all the information (notice the "technology")

[edit] also notice the core...sledgehammers are only in 940 socket opties according to newegg.

try using the latest, normal version of CPU-Z, it might clear some of those errors up

Well, first off, i'll try that later tonight. I see that i'm using 1.26 and 1.37 is out... idk how i'm that far off anyway, news.... i got the multi up to 15X, but it's not stable at that setting, even if i have 1.54Vcore. I can be stable at 14X like 205 ish, right now i'm priming on that.... idk why i can't bring my fsb up like at all.... it's just not stable no matter what i do.

Did you drop the HTT (LDT) multiplyer?

yea, to 3X..well 4X at first then when i get up around the 235-245 range, i drop it to 3X...i can get up there, but nothing is stable. I hear tales of ppl with the same ram and cpu as me (4400+) going 2.7 ish with a fsb of 270 and a multi of 10X

[edit] is it possible to get a ....bad board?

This kind of worries me, I got one of those from the egg when it was that price too. I haven't been able to play with it any because I don't have a PSU yet, but i wonder if they were so cheap cuz they got a bad set in or soemthing?

Considering your overall system, I'd be starting with a 10x on the CPU and the RAM @ DDR400 speeds.
I hope your not set to DDR500 in the BIOS, that will kill your OCing quick!

Nope, i'im not at DDR500 speds in the bios. I've checked that... and for some reason, i have been unable to get the multi down on my FX-55 to the 10X range... i'll try again tonight.

[edit] and once again... has anyone ever had experience with a bad board that will post and boot into windows, but at higher fsb, they'll become unstable..even when you change things(i.e. htt and multi)?
On my 4400, i was able to take the cpu multi down to like 6X and play w/ just the fsb there, but it was never stable above 240....now i can't even get it stable at that high.

Have you tried different BIOS versions. Sometimes the latest isn't the greatest.

check www.dfi-street.com for an bugs the board may have. I couldnt get stable for the life of me until I found out I need to put legacy usb mouse to disable and that cleared it all up. Also make sure your ram is in the correct slots, I ended up having to put mine in the orange slots vs the yellows where apparently BH5 is favored.

good suggestion.... cept for 1 thing... i didn't upgrade my bios when i first got the stuff... but i'll try it again anyway.

i'm up to two things to work on next time i have time:

1) change bios
2) multi down to 10 and work from there.

more suggestions are always appreciated.

I want to clear the air too. I noticed that the Egg has two different FX55's for sale. Both 939, one San Diego and one Clawhammer.

It is, in this case, most likely an issue with an out of date CPUZ, in terms of identifying the FX correctly. Before CPUZ was updated for 939 opterons, mine read as a 940 (just like your FX says now).

LDT/HTT multiplier shouldn't play a part in overclocking until you start raising your FSB(HTT) frequency. If you only raise the CPU multiplier, the HTT multi should remain at 5.

Good luck with the overclocking!!

i know about the ldt/htt multi.... but you usually want to keep the HTT buss down below 1000 mhz. That means once you move over 200 FSB, you should change the LDT/HTT mulit to 4X and once again when you move over 250, the multi should be changed to 3X. This keeps it more stable (from what i've heard)

Have you got the ram running on a divider? If so take it off and set the htt multi to 3 then up the fsb to 250

i'm at school, right now, but i can tell you that it doesn't work.... i'll try again tonight, but i can almost guarantee you it won't. I haven't been able to do anything near 250 with the FX.
[edit] no divider either, but i'll try again.
