So long story short, I have an Asrock X58 Supercomputer motherboard with 6gb (3x2gb Corsair Dominator DDR3). I have been running an Intel i7 920 in this system but have been getting a small upgrade itch lately. After some research I found that the Xeon X5650 was an option that I liked; 6 cores, faster QPI, excellent overclocking potential, and only $70, I couldn't resist. This processor isn't "officially" supported on the Asrock site but I have found other pages and people using this processor in my board. Apparently Asrock just never updated their supported CPU list so I went ahead and ordered it. After receiving it today and ensuring I had the latest BIOS, I installed the new CPU. Upon first boot, nothing. After fiddling around for over an hour trying sequential BIOS updates (weirder things have happened), swapping memory, and reseating more times than the socket is probably good for, I finally got it to boot. It recognized the CPU and booted just fine so I thought I had it. I shut down, reassembled everything, and turned it back on. Nothing. So I spent another hour trying to get it going to no avail so I'm at the end of my whits.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on or what I could try to get this thing up and running? Any help would be appreciated as I'm about to just go back to the i7 920 and give up.

The chip might have been abused. Does the 920 still work in it? I have an X5690 in my Asrock Extreme.. First iteration, latest bios.

The 920 works in it the first time I put it in, every single time. I have never had to reseat it, adjust it, nor had it quit working because I've secured the heatsink.
