X58 with a megahalems?

1100 Views 23 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Riou
So this is what's happening; I wanna go for a X58 motherboard, I've been having trouble even deciding what X58 board to go for but this should narrow it down a bit.

I'm gonna get a Prolimatech Megahalems with two fans in pull/push; I'm going to do this from right to left.

So the question is what type of X58 motherboards would fit a Prolimatech Megahalems without anything getting in the way or causing problems?

Also, would the pull/push be better from bottom to top or should I just do right to left?

Thanks a lot

Left to right and get 120x25 fans. Yate loons would probably be best.

You sure? I was advised to go for these:

They are 120x38.5

Wouldn't that blow air into the case ?

OP,you want the air blowing towards the exhaust fan at the back of your case.38mm fans for optimal static pressure.Check out Shadowclocks Air cooling guide here

As long as you have low profile ram heatsinks and not tall ones that is one of the best fans you can get for the Megahalem. Make sure you have the 38mm fan clips for it to fit. 1 120x38mm fan will cool better than 2 120x25mm fan

You probably want a higher CFM fan than that, especially for 120x38

Something like this would be good

I wouldn't get a ultra kaze at all. undervolted to me they sounded like a clacking noise. 83cfm is more than enough for the megahalem. If you buy from petra's buy http://www.petrastechshop.com/12x38sadesan.html the best 120x38mm fan you can get

Thanks a lot guys

About petrastechshop, does that deliver to the uk or is it just for US?

I still need my question answered about what type of X58 motherboards would fit a Prolimatech Megahalems without anything getting in the way or causing problems?

Technically they're US only, but I've heard they can be accommodating for overseas users. If you want a "pure" Yate but guaranteed shipping, you can use this, and if you want the newer version of the linked San Ace, you can get one here.

As for your other question, you'd have to hop over to the Megahalems club and see for yourself there (and maybe ask there, too).

Look at my first post. It will fit, but with a fan make sure you don't have ram heatsinks that are tall, because with a 120x38mm fan it's not going to fit. With 120x25mm fan it will be a extremely tight fit.

I have the Rampage II Extreme with the exact configuration with the Megahalems and everything is fine.

Thanks a lot, I'll ask around I guess.

Ahh great
I love to see others who have similar to what I'm wanting.

Too bad the Rampage II Extreme is out of my price range, though I may go for it if I've got the money.

hmm I see. Well I'm not truly fond of getting a ram heatsink. Is it really necessary to have a ram heatsink?

Not unless you're talking 2.1+GHz overclocks for the RAM. OCZ Gold (and similar) and Corsair Dominators with the top fins removed will both be short enough to allow such a configuration.

Usually they do.

unless they are corsair dominator tall you should be fine.

Alright, thanks a bunch. G.Skill seem good but for some reason I've seen quite a couple people unhappy with them ;s

I wouldn't mind going for corsair dominators, btw them fins, do they have any use, would removing them make them worse?

Most likely a stupid question but it'd be lurking in the back of my mind else.

Also, are the fins easy to take off?
The fins dissipate heat slightly easier, but I didn't notice a temp increase when I removed them. You only need a 0.8mm hex key to remove them, too.

I have a box full of dead Scythe fans. Not a single one has ever survived my environment for more than a month. And that's rather bad when the fan on the TRUE dies. I no longer recommend them.
