1TB Hard Disk Drives Roundup: 14 Solutions Reviewed

Recently we have taken a look at our HDD section and found that our previous roundup of 1-terabyte models is almost 1 year old. It is an eternity by the standards of the IT industry. Of course, we have been busy writing reviews of 750GB drives and 640GB drives but the pause is rather too long anyway.

Testbed and Methods

The following testing utilities were used:

* IOMeter 2003.02.15
* IOMark 0.30b14
* FC-Test 1.0
* PCMark 2004
* PCMark 2005
* PCMark Vantage

Testbed configuration:

* ASUS P5WDG2 WS Pro mainboard
* Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 processor
* IBM DTLA-307015 system disk, 15GB
* Radeon X600 graphics card
* 1GB DDR2-800 SDRAM
* Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 (and Windows Vista for PCMark Vantage)

Lots of tests and charts in this review.

Great comparison across the board. Shame to see the Barracuda's so far down the list on almost everything! At least mine are ES's not .11's

You "" the methods and system, but not the important part: The conclusions!

Accoridng to the results of our today's test session we decided to award Hitachi E7K1000 and Western Digital Caviar Black with our Editor's Choice title as the best HDD choice for a performance home computer system and Western Digital Green Power WD10EADS - with our Editor's Choice title as the best home theater PC hard drive:

I was going to quote some charts and the conclusion, but decided not to in order to avoid arguments because people feel certain qualities are better than others when they refer to performance in hard drives.

a shame a good company like Seagate stopped making good products...I love WD thought n_n
Well that makes my decision on a 1tb drive pretty easy. WD Black

Yeah WD Blacks are awesome. I have one as a storage atm, but I'll probably get another one and raid them for windows 7.

seems like my storage/program choices are well done

-old 74GB Raptor for OS. (because it's small, no need to partition )
-WD Black 1TB for games and another partition for temporary downloads (fast game loading time)
-WD Green EACS 16MB 3-plater for storage, single partition. (low power, less heat, longer lifespan)

WD Black, the best drive. don't know why people are so excited about Samsung F1 1TB, they are not that good.
If the tested the 7200.12 which only comes in 500GB at the moment, it would be very different.
