The Egg reports the chip as having 4mb L2, but intel says its only 2mb L2. The slightly more chip is 4mb on both places. I know the egg is trustworthy, but I dont know about this one...

EDIT: other sections of Intel show it as a 4mb L2

Couple of opinions please?

I need advice on ram... I know almost nothing about DDR2 in general. Is DDR2 1066 good for 1066mhz bus on a conroe? I really dont know. Also, should I just put a cheap video card in until DX10?

Opinions please!

It would be cool if you managed to get a sick Overclock and Benchmark from that cpu.

You could probably go with lower speed ram, as that board will only support DDR2 800(PC2 6400). Would be wasting money on faster ram, that would not be able to run at top speed.

erm... no thats wrong, if you buy ram that can run at higher speed than ddr800 all it means is that you get more room to overclock.

so ddr800 is good for a fsb of 400mhz, ddr10000 is good for 500mhz etc etc

so if you raise the fsb up to reach say 500mhz then your ram will be working at 500mhz or 1000mhz effective (ddr)

except if you run a divider which he wont have to do.

oh, well sorry for wrong info. Maybe it is just me who would get ddr2 800, and not the ddr2 1066, cuz of price, that ram is too expensive for me, for just being ram. And there is no ddr10000, that would crazy.

As far as what I've seen you can use also a divider like 5:4 for the ram, which means that even if you're @400FSB the ram doesn't have to be @DDR800. The ideal would be to keep a 1:1 ratio, but DDR1000+ ram is not that cheap. For somem memory recomandation I'd check this article @anandtech. There are many modules being tested, most of them are rated DDR667 but they work just fine over 1000 with a slight Vbump.

As for the VID card we're one month away from the G80 launch, the first Dx10 card. I bet we'll see some benches before that so we'll know what to expect. As always this is not a good time to upgrade, but even over a month there will be people saying "wait another month as ATI/AMD R600 would launch".

he's not really wanting to upgrade, as much as he is just wanting to build a computer with the Xeon chip, to see how it overclocks, since it cost just alittle more then the e6300, but has 4m L2 cache, compared to the 2m L2 of the e6300

Hm this surely is a 4mb chip according to Intels box number. Thats interesting its basically a 6300 with 4mb L2 cache.

twice the cache? I realize a huge difference from the same procesor just with double the l2 cache (my stock opty 144 vs stock 3000)

Its only like $20-30 more then the e6300, and has 2MB more L2 cache, that is why he is buying it.

aswell as that, it may also overclock better - and he is getting it to test if it does

Its also a test of a new product for you all to see!

I think im going to go with cheaper ram as suggested and there are sooo many open box specials on x1900 cards on the egg. I'll just upgrade to DX10 when I see necisary.

And where is Chozart on all of this?

That cache wont show any benefit out of synthetic benchmarks. Anyone who says different is wrong. You have the chance that it wont work at all. And Odds are it wont overclock better. Things will be different sightly such as timings, it has to run 24/7 so they change a lil for stablility. But hey see hat happens im just as curious as you

In the offchance that it doesnt work so well I will just sell the chip on ebay or something and upgrade to an e6### series. However, I doubt that I will need to do that because of the same conroe core.

well there is also supsicion that it good overclock better for the same reason the Opterons overclocked so well: server class silicon. those small changes are great for stability and if it is made of a higher grade silicon then it has a chance to overclock very well althought I might be wrong (not very educated in the fabrication of xeon processors )
