XFX 9800GT fan won't stay set at 100% manual

XFX 9800GT fan won't stay set at 100% manual. I set it to 100% in rivatuner and a few seconds later it has been reset to 50% it's making my card run at like 76C under load
even with a 20" box fan blowing on the case.

Maybe a driver thing? What drivers are you running? Either way though 76C at load is nothing for a 9800gt. You could leave it at that and the card would be fine.

P.S. This should be in the nvidia gpu section not the [email protected] section.
I have a PNY 9800GT that does the exact same thing.....

I was going to try EVGA Precision on that machine to see if it will stick.

Plus a new version is out.

I am using the 182.08 drivers and I have tried low level and the system tweak sections both do the same thing. It's at 76C on stock and I would like to OC it when the new PSU gets here. What is the safe operating temp limit for a GT?

Incorrect whenever anyone asks a question in there about a card that is used for folding they are ignored, or told to go to the NVIDIA section or given advice that does not apply at all to folding. This is the proper place.
Now in this one instance would I have probably gotten decent advice over there, yes, but 90% of the time I would not.

As my 4850 idles at 82C you have nothing to worry about.

Anything below 105C is just fine for a video card.
My 8800GT doing the same thing...oh well, it doesn't get warmer than 55C anyway.

105c is a bit high. I wouldn't let it get too much past 90c and your gravy.

Your question has nothing to do with folding at all, it has to do with a 9800gt overclock. Just because the card is gonna fold the question is still a GPU question not a folding question and therefore belongs in the GPU forum.

Try to completely remove and reinstall drivers. I was having a similar issue and a driver update fixed it, I was running pretty old drivers at the time though so your problem might be something else. Couldn't hurt though.

Did I not say that on this rare occasion this topic might have been ok to put in the GPU section?

I will try to reinstall the drivers and then if that doesn't work try precision in a little while. it's my dad's computer and he is just letting me put some cards in it to fold with.

XFX 9800gt runs HOT, mine idles at 70C with 700 Core clock
You can set the fan speed manually in Rivatuner, using the power user section..see below for example.

RivaTuner>Fan>Current Device>

*make sure the 'light-bulbs' on "apply at startup" and "fan speed" are set to on or enabled.

Is it immediately changing back to 50% or does it change when you are playing a game? My GF tried playing some random free MMO and the fan speed on her 8600GT was changed from the 80% that i set back to auto. This only happened with this game. my only guess was that the games anti hack crap thought rivatuner was a hack?

It goes about 3 seconds and then changes back.

Is that the EVGA or Riva?

Riva

Actually was playing around with it I enabled OCing and up the the shader to the next strap and rest the fan to 100% and it seem to be staying on now. We will see though.
OK I had the same problem with EVGA and figured it out by setting it to 90-95% then raising it to 100% after it ran for a while....made 9800 sound like a shop vac

Ok I will try that, because it just reset to 50% or auto or whatever again

Have you tried using the fan setting I posted, in the power user section of rivatuner? Using the fan control section of rivatuner, only provides a temp fix for fans with most all of the newer drivers.

IMO- I used to have the same problem, until I used the method I posted
..just my
..what do I know
