XFX 9800GT Overclock problem

1140 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Papa.Smurf
I used rivatuner and did a small overclock just to test.

Core Clock - 650
Shader Clock- 1600
Mem Clock - 960

I went into ATI Tool scaned for artifacts for about an hour and watched the temp. Everything seemed to pass. I then Bootup fall out 3 and I cant even get past the title screen without freezing.

I need some help with this overclock. I see alot of people get into the 7's for the core 17-18 with the shader and over 1000 with the mem.

Should I try a different OC software? Or is my card junk?

This is how I did the overclock.

I raised core clock and shader clock by 10 then tested, then I did the same with memory. I did that until I hit 650/1600/960 just to see if the OC worked. I then Hit apply and clicked ok. I fired up GPU-z and ATI Tools, I scaned for an hour. Then I tried Fallout 3 and like I said couldnt even get past the title screen.

Did I overclock correctly and if not could someone point me to a guide.

Thank You.

Ok, now I am starting to think it is Fallout 3 that is the problem.

I am having the EXACT same problem. I have my 9800GT oc'ed to about 750, have been playing multiple games with no problem.

However, it was right around the time I installed Windows 7 that I actually went from an over clock of about 700 to 750. I then could NOT get FO3 to run. I had attributed it to Windows 7 adn a driver. So I tried running in Vista, sure enough it would not run until I down clocked my card back to around 650 or 700 before it would run.

This is a very strange issue. It seems like if it was going to crash it would crash in all games, or at least multiple games, and not just FO3.

I would very interested to see if anyone else is having the same problem.

You can try different software, but it is the same thing I am using.

Yep. That is the way you do it.

The card is junk? I have the same card as you, it SHOULD overclock very well. Have you tried running other games?

What temperatures do you get with the card?

to test stability on newer cards either download FureMark and use that or just run a game.

No not yet. Good to find someone who has the XFX 9800GT.

What settings do you suggest and for how long should I run it?

I also just got this card and will start playing with a little OC shortly - will let you know how I get on.
You need to change the fan speed of your card. Take it to 100 percent when gaming and your problem will be fixed, and you can even OC higher,, gl,

I run it for about a half hour or until it crashes then if its stable just run a game to double check. As for the settings select the highest AA, make sure the stability box is checked, and use what ever res you'd like.
