Bill Gates's sprawling Washington state compound is, as you might expect, packed to the gills with bleeding-edge gear, from the heated floors and 20-seat home theater to the X-ray machine (for screening the mail, of course) and miles of fiber-optic cabling. But here's what you definitely won't find at chez Gates: an iPhone.

In the latest issue of Vogue, Bill's wife, Melinda Gates, reveals that among the "very few things" on "the banned list in our household" areâ€"you guessed itâ€"iPods and iPhones.

Brutal, yesâ€"especially for Bill and Melinda's three kids (two daughters and a son, aged 12, six, and nine, respectively), who'll just have to grin and bear it as their little pals make merry with the latest and greatest iPod.

And even Melinda herself admits to an occasional pang of Apple envy: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say, 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone.'" (Ouch!)

Then again, what else did we expect from Microsoft founder Bill Gates? The man has his pride, not to mention scores of Windows Mobile and Zune team members who'd probably feel a tad bit hurt if Bill Jr. was running around with an iPhone.

So, which phones and MP3 players are on the Gates's "good-to-go" list? Well, there's always the Zune for music and videoâ€"not the sexiest MP3 player out there, mind you, but at least it's got Wi-Fi and a snazzy interface.

And of course, there are plenty of Windows Mobile handsets to choose from; personally, I'd go for the Palm Treo Pro (if I had to get a Windows Mobile phone, that is), although it's not exactly a barrel of fun for the teens. Or how about the HTC Touch Pro? That's a pretty cool phone … I guess (as I pat the iPhone 3G in my jeans pocket).

iPhone = fashion statement and giant d-bag sign. :\\

It's a crying shame Adam Savage has one...I can only hope he ends up losing it in a myth somehow.

My house will be the same way. No crapple. :\\ Too expensive, can't afford, find a cheaper alternative. lawl.
No iphone for home, work out floor with 3G, but is it for 2G like 3G when you no lift it to be for men, for 3G instead? or half is 1G for 2G?

Maybe it's just me but being the wife or a child of a billionaire , especially one in the computer industry, I would just ask for a custom mp3/media device/phone. Ipod , Iphone , what? What's cooler than having some badarse device no one else can get(as long as its done right)?
Yeah those kids are REALLY hurting. "Daddy can I have another 5 Zunes and a Blackberry for my weekend present?"

But that meme is complete fail....I can't even comprehend what the point is. At least "All your base are belong to us!" is strait forward!

How about this...I'll give you a gif about mine, and you give me a gif about yours.

Why would anyone want the iPhone? There are tons of better phones out there. I use the Samsung innov8, I'd take it over the iPhone any day.
What kind of multi-billionare would let their child play with the sort of commoners who don't use gold plated phones?

That's quite torturing for the children . They have the money but can only watch their friends using a ipod haha! Microsoft might as well create a mp3

I'm pretty well versed in almost every meme ever created.

I'm pretty sure most people, except Apple fan boys, agree though. Even though my best friend has one. They are pretty neat, but only if they are jail broken. Even then, he has problems with it.

meh, who needs an iphone anyways?

windows mobile is perfectly fine
I have a BlackBerry Bold. Just thought I'd throw that in there.
After a day of using it I can safely say it pisses all over my N95 and the symbian OS.
I guess Bill Gates finding that his kids have been using Apple hardware is on the same level as discovering they're on crack.

I can understand him not wanting Apple's hardware around to be honest. Plus it would make for some interesting PR relations problems. Sorta crappy topic that The Inquirer might pick up on.
