Building a new gaming PC I am. I've got the case, power supply and cooler already, mobo ordered last night. Time to jump in up to my ass in my first sleeving attempt! PSU I picked is a Corsair 850AX. If i had known there were so many doubled wires, or the awesome pigtail curlycue seen below,

I might have picked a different PSU for my first try. Oh well, from what I've read if I can tackle this one, I'll be well learned on sleeving

I ended up going with the heatshrinkless method for a couple reasons.
One, **** heatshrink on paracord. I tried short, long, cussing and screaming, but simply could not get the shrink to reliably stay on. it would either slipp off hte pin, or the sleeve would slip out. And it turns out that the heatshrinkless method is really really easy. Like almost cheating easy.
Two, Damn heatshrinkless on black molex connectors looks sexy!

GPU: For the moment a Gigabyte 650Ti that I already have. It will be ok for the short term, and I'd rather spend the money on the base components. I'll be getting a new GPU soon, and the 650 will be demoted to my next build, a media PC.
Will also be throwing a couple of 120mm red LED fans in the top of the case, but haven't picked them out yet.

As you can see, there is a definite red and black theme here, so these are the paracord colors I've picked

The stock Corsair sleeve, in case you haven't seen it before. not bad...but I think we can do much better!


12pin Side of the PCIE cable, +2 double wired connectors removed, we don't need those crazy things!

Will be stitching the cables with black nylon thread once I get them in the case, so they will look far less tangled after that. Now onto figuring out the tangled mess that is the 24pin cable, YAY!

* Update *

Started stitching the 24 pin cable. I've gotten the first row done...


....and run into an issue. Corsair PSUs have an empty pin on the ATX cable


The problem is this, since the stitch cinches down on the cables, it will pull the cables to either side of the empty pin together, as my second grader drawing shows:


For the first row this isn't a problem as the wires are held apart by the pins in the connector, but the next rows will be badly out of shape because of this. The only solution i can think of is to go ahead and connect a wire into the empty pin slot, as a kind of spacer to keep it from cinching down. My question is this, will putting a wire in the empty slot damage anything?

When I've had this I simply do a dummy splice into the wire behind it i.e. I heatshrink it onto the wire without actually cutting or soldering it.

what he did basically was to put something that isnt a conductor as a dummy pin, and sleeve/heatshrink it and use the stiching.

I'm sorry to be so dense, but some specifics would be great. What would be used as a dummy pin? Would it work heatshrinkless to match the rest? What would keep it in the connector if it doesn't have the tabs that a real pin does? I'm a bit nervous jury-rigging my PSU, so anything I do, I'd like to be able to to go step by step with something tested and proven.

Give me a few minutes I'll make up a demo.

Quick and dirty:

Sleeve both wires



I've nipped off the end of the pin on the dummy wire



Then spliced the dummy wire onto the other wire with heatshrink

Oh I think I see, there's a pin on the 24pin connector side, to keep it in the connector, and the other end has no pin, just shrinks and hides in the back, same as double wire splices. Thanks for the pics, and explanation

I recently finished sewing my 24-pin cable and ran into the same issue with the empty space in the connector. I didn't have much trouble with it, though; I just went ahead and sewed that single cable as if it were a stack of two, and everything turned out even and tidy.
