Google's open mobile OS platform Android is buoying the fortunes of Linux-powered smartphones. The news for Apple's iPhone, however, is not so good.

According to analyst house Gartner, the iPhone saw a quarter-on-quarter sales decline in Q4 08 as the device took 10.7 per cent share of the smartphone market, compared to 12.9 per cent share the previous quarter.

Overall, I'm pretty sure the iPhone isn't suffering at all.

I'd agree with that. I think the article does kind of overreact a little....

I agree... what I don't get though is that for such a "cool" phone it lacks basic technologies (i.e. camera zoom, MMS messaging, etc.).

I know that it's the cool phone for the gen. population, but it is tanking in Japan. They are giving it away for free with service agreements... lol.

I'm looking forward to the G1 ... er, G2... to not looking so 'clunky'-- I would like to see ATT pick it up as well.

Just my humble thoughts...

The Iphone would pick up more sales if they dropped the damn price a bit. It has been out about 7 months now, and it has still remained at the same price point. They can blame themselves.

It's not that expensive though is it? It's only $200 with a service contract. I don't think that's overly expensive, given the cost of competing phones. W/o a contract yea...all those phones a crazy expensive.

How come basically every article I read from ZDNet is a complete joke. They bashed the Cinema Display since it didn't cost the same as cheap displays which use garbage TN panels.
i'd take my storm over the iphone any day, i just wish it had more apps.
The price of the phone could go down a little, but what really sucks in the monthly service bill. OMG that is where things are getting ridiculous.
its probally because the google phone is cheaper and easier to get.
Thank you
I just want the Iphone Quad or the next generation already, Firmware updates can't improve the phone in the areas I want. Just improve the camera quality and add features that support it, add video at a decent res and good frames, native SMS messaging, the ability to calibrate the accelerometer in settings and the ability to turn it to its side when texting and it would be a perfect phone IMO.
Considering the feature freedom and expandability of the Android platform, as well as the superb Android Marketplace, its no wonder the iPhone is losing out.

Also, Hardware Keyboard. Software Keypads need to go and die in a small little hole.

All smartphone data plans are ridonkulous. I had the Samsung Omnia...right off the bat the data plan is $30/month with Verizon, in addition to the Voice plans. I couldn't justify paying that much a month so I switched to the LG Dare.

Verizon needs to jump on the G2.. Android is never going to be fully ported to my vx6800 and we never get the "good" phones.

It is when you consider competing phones.

HTC Touch HD: Ok, so maybe the R&D costs are nothing quite like that of the Iphone, but it is an extremely good competitor. My mate has one of these and they are absolutely top notch phones, only thing it lacks is the lack of applications. That is the only real advantage the Iphone has over it.

Over here the HTC is free (on contract) were as the Iphone 8GB is £100 for the phone and you still have the monthly bills. The Iphone 16GB is £180 + contract bills

Google G1: Just as advanced as the Iphone, the only REAL difference between them is that the Iphone user interface is more refined. Sure, the Iphone has slightly more power under the hood, but again it does not justify the price tag (IMO)

One of the reasons why I chose the G1 over the Iphone, because the G1 was free and the Iphone is still £100. This is just my opinion, but personally by now they should be dropping the price. However it is common place for Apple to keep prices sky high for as long as their products shall live.

If you stick to the confines of the contract you should just get the base rate. Anything other than that and you can't really complain about the extra costs
I personally think that the contract monthly payments are alright, but again that is just my opinion.

I got an LG Veiwty 18 months ago. I had it for one month before giving it to my bird and getting an N95. Touch screen is not responsive enough for texting and it never will be. Physically buttons are just so much better for typing. Hence why you wouldn't want a touch screen keyboard compared to physical keys.

This is the exact reason why I got the G1 over the Iphone. I like the concept of touch screen but I just can't stand texting with it. The price of the Iphone put me off, but this was the real deciding factor for me.

As a phone, I have nothing against the Iphone. It is a great little machine that packs a heavy punch. I just think Apple are coming unstuck, they most probably thought that the hype would carry them through this year, but it seems like it may not.

Every phone should be less then $100 with a contract. Those contracts they make you get are always so expensive.
