I have narrowed down my problem to an issue with the software firewall and not the router. I can print over the network with my firewall off but when it is turned on it is blocking the print job.
I have added the IP address of the print server to ZoneAlarm, rebooted the computer, restarted the router, and I am not sure what I should do next. What am I forgetting to do? Thanks.
Try going into the ZA control panel and on the left side click on the program control tab, then click on the program tab and scroll down till you find your programs for your printer and then left click in the trust level column and click "trusted" on anything to do with your printer. Hope this makes sense.

As far as the network goes, everything prints fine until the ZA is turned on. If I shut off ZA I can print over the network using the print server. If I remove the print server from the equation and plug the USB printer into my pc I can print locally from that pc and I can also print remotely from my laptop.
Edit: Everything printed fine with ZA turned on before I added the print server.
I meant in XP but I think what I would try next is to completely uninstall ZA and reinstall with everything connected and with that when ZA windows start popping up you can configure it fresh. It is late and I will check back tomorrow to see how it went for you, good luck.
I hope no news is good news?? ZA can be very wierd sometimes ( I know because I use it too) and I know for the longest time ZA had issues with Windows Messenger Live and not letting you get connected. That was an issue with ZA's compatibility with the program and I know that ZA had to fix the problem from their end. Maybe if your printer server is very new it "could" be something maybe a quick call to ZA support might answer for you.
Also you could try to lower your security settings in ZA, uninstall/reinstall, make sure everything is set to "always allow", etc....it sounds like you have done the hard stuff already with the IP's and stuff. I am not that knowledgeable with opening and configuring the firewall ports but maybe you need to look there.

The print server IP address is added to the trusted zone. The ports are open on the router because it prints over the network when ZA is off. Is there a way to open ports in the ZA program itself?
Blade - I have no update as of yet because I did not get a chance to reinstall. GF was over and using the printer etc. I'll get a chance to do it this morning around 5:30 AM. Thanks for checking back in.
I did the clean reinstall with no luck. The only way that it will print is if I turn the program control completely off causing the outbound protection to be disabled. Even if I put it on Low, causing the program control to go into learning mode, it still will not print while ZA monitors it.
Edit: I even bumped the printing progs from trusted to super - nothing going on there either.
I had the same problem using the IOGEAR GPSU21 print server and Zone Alarm. I finally got it to work by allowing the Spooler SubSystem program to have SERVER rights in the Trusted zone as well as ACCESS rights to the Trusted and Internet zone with a 3 bar trust level.
Hey thanks! That is something that I did not try. GF fell asleep on the couch over by the printer so I dare not try it now LOL I AM tempted, but I won't. I'll try in the morning. Rep for you if this works.
Also, welcome to the forums. Hope you enjoy your stay. Please fill out your system specs under the UserCP menu.
Spooler SubSystem - oh why didn't I think of that!! Spooler SubSystem is window's printing service, and you can find it in task manager as spoolsv.exe - it must be enabled and given all access if you printer is to work properly
