Hey guys, so i've been watercooling for a couple months now. But now that my sig rig is aging, it's time to start again. This time it's with the Corsair 800D and full watercooling. Plenty of 800D's have been shown off on this website and i'd like to think im not another sheep but hey, i like the look of the case, and the functionality it has, especially with a wc setup.
anyway, i ordered the case on monday from a cyber monday deal for 235 with free shipping. when i get paid on the 10th it'll be the beginning of the build as i will buy the main components for the wc setup.

alright so i've been doing some thinking. in the beginning i really wanted to do a dual loop setup. but now that i think about it, i could do a single loop with the two rads that are focused for certain things.

i could have it
res>pump>240>cpu>mb>360>gpu>gpu>res

but my dual loop was going to be based on the rads cooling specific things if you will.
240=cpu/mb
360=graphics
of course then i'd have dual reservoirs and dual pumps.

im going for minimum decibels, but i also would like great cooling.
the pump i selected to use; the mcp655, is a little loud but has great amounts of flow.

i have one mcp350 in my current setup and i cant even hear it, though it only has one third of the flow as the 655.
what do you guys think? personally, i feel like if i go dual loop, i'd go with two 350's. if i go single loop, i'd go with one 655.

thoughts? thanks!

As many times I've seen question on loop order in this forum, people will say It doesn't matter what order, just as long as res is before the pump. The temp will equalize, and temp will end up being the same throughout the loop. It's better to go serial anyway... so if one pump goes out... you still have a complete loop. I went with serial on my build with 2 pumps and 2 sided bay res. It's sort of dual loops, but one loop goes to the opposite res, so it's like an alternating serial loop. I did this for pump redundancy so if one pump fails... my loop still can function with remaining pump. My loop order is... res1>pump1>360>cpu>mb>res2>pump2>240>gpu>gpu>res1.

12/6/11 - UPDATE

alright so i got the case last friday. and this thing is huge! i've messed with it in person at my local Fry's,i guess it's because its a clear comparison to my current case. but today was the only day i could actually work on it, i've been so busy with work.

first thing i did was completely strip it down:
IMG_0536.jpg

now my main focus at the moment is to modify the case so i can accommodate a 140mm fan in the front for intake, therefore eliminating the hotswap hdd bay, and replacing the front panel bay door with a grill for the fan. the first thing i noticed was that the hotswap bay is held in only by rubber holders that are attached to the 5.25" bay above it and the panel below it. i realized that for the bottom, the rubber was also held in with metal pins...
IMG_0539.jpg

(the rubber around the pins looks screwy because i took a razor to the rubber around the pins before actually grinding the pins down)

all the top required was to pry the topside metal up so i could take out the rubber holding it in place..
IMG_0540.jpg

after that, i grinded down the metal pins and was able to slip the bay out of the case, leaving me with the rubber mat that separated the lower flat panel and the hotswap bay..
IMG_0544.jpg

taking the rubber mat off, you can see the metal pins that held the bay in place. well, that just wont do.
IMG_0542.jpg

these are my money-makers..
IMG_0547.jpg

there we go:)
IMG_0548.jpg

now the next thing to do was to remove the lower hdd cage so i could place my future 240 rad in it's stead. simple procedure, find the 4 rivets holding it in, 2 in the front, 2 on top of the lower panel, drill em out, and then slide the cage out..
IMG_0550.jpg

and just like that, im that much closer to finishing up the modification to the case. my goal is to keep this thing as OEM as possible. no external rads, no external anything, the only exception being the 140mm fan grill in the front.

i found some nice pvc that i can use to hold the weight up for the lower panel, but that'll be for another day. i got work later today and staying at the g/f's after.
thanks for looking!

Looking good so far, but I really dont like that you are using pre-sleeved extensions.

You also could-have gone with dual Liang DDC with a XSPC top to put them in serial and save some $ with that second rad. Would have also saved some $ by not needing the mod kits at all. All those swiftechs are, are rebranded Laing (old model Laings, not the newer 1T Plus)

As well, coud have gone with a different retailer to get stuff cheaper, but quicker too. I love FrozenCPU but they gouge you so bad on some things.

oh man im glad you brought up the sleeving. i scrapped the pre-sleeved idea and decided to go with ftwpc's sleeving. red, black, white. i'll look into those 1T plus's though. thanks for the heads up. but you really think that if i run the pumps in serial, i could eliminate the 240 rad? that's just hard to believe because i plan on having vga, cpu, mobo, and ram blocks. mobo and ram blocks are the more restrictive as well. and yeah i am now considering different retailers as i have found the same things for cheaper elsewhere other than frozencpu.

12/9/11 UPDATE

alright so in preparation for all the wc supplies i decided to tackle the lower 240 mod, as well as make a bay door replacement
biggrin.gif

i have vast amounts of 1/4" polycarbonate sheets, and decided to make that as my bay door void filler for the 140mm grill in the front:
IMG_0553.jpg

measured out the 240 at the bottom.. (really just used a 120mm fan and traced twice)
IMG_0555.jpg

and bam!
IMG_0556.jpg

finished:
IMG_0560.jpg

on another note, im having slight thoughts about powdercoating the case when im done modifying it. but by the time i figure out forsure what kind of setup i will go with, i'll be too deep into it to want to actually send it off lol

Even if I used ftw sleeve, I have to say mdpc is easier to work with in routing wires... since it's thinner sleeve. FTW PC is coming out with a thinner version that will compete with mdpc, but it isn't out yet... at least last I check, it wasn't out yet.

i think i will just go the ftwpc route. i've been trying for 2 days to get the english version of mdpc to work but nope. i cant get the currency to change at all its really frustrating. either way since im getting the corsair atx1200 i'll be just fine with the ftwpc sleeving.

and my girlfriend would like to point out that it was her idea for using polycarbonate sheeting on the front panel

12/13/11 UPDATE

just made my first purchase toward the watercooling side of the build.

parts included:

10x Enermax TB Silence 120mm
2x Enermax TB Silence 140mm
1x Black Ice SR1 240 Radiator
1x Black Ice SR1 360 Radiator
1x Phobya 140 "Stripes" Radiator Grill
1x Phobya 240 "Hexx" Radiator Grill
1x Koolance 3x120mm fan shroud
1x Lamptron 4 channel 5.25 fan controller "Rhoebus"
2x 120mmx2mm rubber ran silencer
6x Phobya 120mmx7mm rubber shroud/silencer
3x Apevia 120mm black fan grill
10x female 3pin fan connector
10x male 3pin fan connector
30x fan connector pins

i was pissed because ftwpc ran out of black sleeving as soon as i went to buy some. i decided mdpc-x is just too expensive plus the owner is out for medical reasons. im sure ftwpc's sleeving is just as great.

seeing as i ordered from 4 different sites it'll take some time for all the parts to get to me, in the mean time i am trying to figure out how i will run the pumps and the locations on the case to place them. i want to have 2 fill ports at the top of the case, with a similar drain setup out the back or something. i still need to figure that all out.
thanks!

12/17/11 UPDATE

alright so i've got a few things in the mail so far,

fan controller
fan shrouds/silencers
fan grills.

all i need left is the actual fans and the radiators with the rad grills as well.

but in the mean time, i got to work.

after i sat in front of my case for hours trying to find a smart way to mount the hdd without blocking airflow coming from the front of the case i figured out something pretty cool and i think you guys will like it.
i'll let the pictures do most of the talking, i'll just narrate
biggrin.gif

first off i knew exactly how i was going to mount the front fan so i just started working on the hdd mounting...
2011-12-17_14-59-04_699.jpg

and then...
2011-12-17_16-07-52_787.jpg

wallah!
2011-12-17_16-08-28_465.jpg

then it was time for the fan mounting..
2011-12-17_14-59-58_143.jpg

and then...
2011-12-17_16-08-53_319.jpg

bam!
2011-12-17_16-16-31_669.jpg

biggrin.gif

now i thought this was pretty cool:
2011-12-17_16-23-03_656.jpg

remember, i got plenty of polycarbonate sittin' around...
2011-12-17_16-26-27_722.jpg

after a little measuring and cutting i got this, which when loose allows you to slide it back and forth to plug in the cables...
2011-12-17_16-47-04_802.jpg

2011-12-17_16-46-55_288.jpg

cables installed..
2011-12-17_16-50-28_2.jpg

and from the side..
2011-12-17_16-51-24_891.jpg

im going to trim a little more from around where the 90 degree cables are on the hdd so i can achieve a little more clearance and therefore not have the hdd at a slight angle when tightened down.

but i gotta get ready for a company dinner so i'll do that later tonight
biggrin.gif

hope you guys enjoyed that i know i did lol

+ Rep for awesome ingenuity and subbed for interest as I'm starting to ponder a custom WC'd loop for my next build which I've started dreaming about (prob next July/August)

Great original case modding there. Keep it up.

hahaha yeah i'm a man of my word. i mean i don't have the cash flow as some guys on here but for lack of cash flow i strive to make up for with ingenuity and creativity so im still hopeful this build continues as well as it has so far.

yes i definitely will. i'm really excited about these fans coming in and i have a great feeling about how they'll perform with my setup. i mean they only push 42cfm put they also develop a great amount of static pressure, plus my radiators are designed for sub-800rpm fans so it should work out perfect. the fans will be a big highlight for this build imo because i haven't seen many people run them at all, especially not like how im about to do it, with a total of 12 haha.

here is a nice write up on those fans: http://www.kitguru.net/components/cooling/zardon/enermax-tb-silence-and-apollish-vegas-fans-review/

quick UPDATE

i was able to modify the hdd wiring space some more to allow more room, here's a pic of it finished:
2011-12-18_00-39-19_901.jpg

(luckily this part of the case will be unseeable because i am not happy with my sloppy grinding!)

now because i was able to move the hdd forward a little bit more i was then able to get the hdd completely flush with the 5.25" cage..
2011-12-18_00-40-25_427.jpg

2011-12-18_00-40-48_429.jpg

when i finished up the hdd mounting i realized that i might be able to mount my pumps right behind the polycarbonate as the size may be almost perfect for them. here is a picture of what im talking about, with the theoretical pump locations in red..
2011-12-18_00-39-19_901pumplocations.jpg

my plan is to get 2 mcp35x's or 2 mcp355's but may be tempted for 2 mcp655's if they're not much bigger footprint wise than the mcp3xx's.
any input would be appreciated, thanks!

12/19/11 UPDATE

alright so i have been doing a lot of 800D build log lurking and i saw a lot of people cut out the mesh on the top that bracket in the 3x 120mm fans or 360 radiators. they cut out the mesh, but only the mesh. i see the advantage of removing the mesh but that wasn't good enough for me. i realized this when i put a single 120mm fan up from the bottom and saw how much the rest of the surrounding metal covered the fan's outer edge. my build being a low flow, silent aimed build i couldn't have anything inhibiting the fans from maximum airflow, so i decided to cut out the entire grill area except the mounting holes of course. the product of my idea was this:

IMG_0573.jpg

when that was done, i needed to address the classic sag problem one enounters when removing the lower hdd cage. i took some 3/4" OD pvc pipe, sanded it down a little, and spray painted it matte black.
IMG_0574.jpg

the picture doesn't do it justice, the blacks are much more similar to each other, i think it might have been the glow the wood table was giving off under yellow light.

and here's my case as it sits right now, awaiting the rads and fans that should arrive tomorrow or wednesday.
IMG_0577.jpg

thanks
