Can My Power Supply handle crossfire?

hi guys, i was looking around, and i found a 5830 for cheap, around 120 bucks, no tax, and i was like....
rolleyes.gif

anyways, i was thinking about it, then i pulled an ammeter and split the power cord from the back of my PC, careful not only get though the rubber and not touch the metal wires inside, i ran Prime 95 + and older copy of FurMark, to get maximum power, now it sucked about 400 watts from the wall, but that doesnt necessarily mean a 400W PSU is needed,

anyways i have an Ultra LSP 750W PSU, and its rated for 78% efficiency,, since im pulling 400W from the wall, do you think that my PSU can handle a second one? now if i did the math simply, it would work out to around 600W ish... from the wall, but i remember that some PSU's are rated for MAX output, not sustained output, so if my current PSU can handle crossfire 5830s than ill grab it, if not than i wont buy the second 5830

Very easily..

so you think my PSU can handle that much power SUSTAINED? because unlike Corsair or Seasonic, Many PSU companies out there write down the MAX output, not MAX SUSTAINED.... and the fact that i got this thing for 60 bucks scares me...

Yep your psu can take that. But Ultra isn't the best so maybe get a new Antec, Corsair, XFX, Seasonic psu.
i know, i would have bought an antec earthwatts, or the Seasonic 650W from NCIX, but i didnt know about this when i was buying a PSU.. so i cheaped out and grabbed an Ultra PSU... next time im grabbing a modular Corsair PSU.. but the idea is to not buy a new PSU, so...

They only rate it like 100 above at max.
true... so.. a 750 W PSU.. drawing 600W from the wall, .. at 78% efficiency is..about 470W and if my 750 watt PSU cant put out a tad over half of its rated power, then i would get really pissed off.... but then again, iv seen some pretty silly things.. my old 350W PSU choked on itself and started restarting my PC in games at a load of only 120W

You'll be just fine....how old is that psu?

about a year old, since i built the rig =P and its pulling 600W not outputting 600W, its rated for output, but i just need verification that my PSU can output the close to 500W of power that i need to run this settup, also your Tri-SLI is uber smexy

Pity Phaedrus or TwoCables isn't around...I'd go with what either of them said.

I believe you'll be fine...for how long, not so sure.
indeed, i hear some pretty nasty things happening during PSU degrade... and i forgot to register the Ultra lifetime warrenty within the month... so i only get 3 years XD

correction, 400W at 78% effeciency = approx 320W output, so that means that a second one bumps up input to about 600W, and output is about 500W, (closer to 470W) so i think my PSU should at LEAST be able to push that much.. but what about PSU denigration, how much will that factor in? and how long till it cant handle crossfire? 3 more years?

alrighty thanks guys... so what do u guys think? is it worth crossfiring another 5830? it would beat GTX 295 performance by a nice margin, and everyone remembers that massive mofo am i right

, so for 120 bucks is it worth it?

jeez really? man i was hopping Ultra would be nicer... but i guess u get what you pay for right?

ugh... thats disgusting... man did i get ripped off... but i built the rig as a noob so whatever...but i wonder... will Metro 2033 max out my system ? cuz i still cant beat that game, it lags at the part in the tunnel, and i am an OCN member, i allways run MAX

well the PSU came with 2x6 pins and 1x8 pin... so i would need to use the cables supplied to make the 2x6 pins needed for another 5830

also, please fill in ur system spec

about the cables thing.. i think thats what happened with early Dell OEM PSUs during the Pentium 4 generation, the thing had like 8 SATA connectors, and a 6 pin connector, but they could barely run what they could connect to...

so whats the verdict? yes or no? crossfire? or no crossfire?

ill reply in a bit when i finish my works cited

hmm ic.. well i was hoping that if it did work then i could grab another 5830, but i dont want to waste money for another upgrade, as i wont be until after graduation, i probably wont even be playing that many games throughout highschool so theres no point in upgrade all the time, ill live with what i have and save up 2K for a nice rig in grade 12 =P

ill get a GTX 980 and an intel 64 core processor with an Asus Uber Pwn ROG board.. and a really smexy 2 gajillion watt PSU from Corsair, and a Petabyte SSD from intel running with SATA 1TB/s speeds
tongue.gif

then ill continue to play crysis 1 with it and get 40FPS

thanks for the help everyone !
