[CNET] Are mobile phones causing the decline in bee numbers?

A recent scientific study suggests that bees are significantly disturbed when mobile phones are used in close proximity to the furry critters. The study may shed light on why the bee population is in decline globally.

As bees can communicate through sound, the experiment at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology observed any changes to the noises the insects made when active mobile phones were placed in their hive. The results were quite worrying.

The bees made certain noises associated with a distressed colony as soon as the mobile phones were engaged. Twelve hours later, they still exhibited signs of disturbance. The implication is that sustained exposure to the electromagnetic waves emitted by mobile phones can eventually cause bee colonies to break up and die.

Wasn't this established years ago? I've definitely heard it before.

I am a beekeeper personally and have done it for many years! I think this is interesting!

The other thing that has hurt them bad is the Varroa mite, GMO crops, and the EPA just released here in the states that they allowed a pesticide that would kill them on contact.

Thanks!

Nice dude. I'd die because I'd break out in an allergic reaction to the stings lol.

This is interesting. Sad thing is, if this is the cause, we'll just have to learn to live without them(bees). No way people are going to give up cell phones to "just save some bees". Not knowing what the implications of a bee shortage or extinction really are. Even more sad is even if they did know how bad it would be, they still probably wouldn't give up their phone.

But no bees means no fruits and veggies thati can snack on in the yard...

I think he meant it as a joke...

Technically it is regurgitated. Bees have 2 stomachs one to eat with and one to take in flower nectar and turn it into Honey with enzymes.

I want two stomachs.

But for real, bees do a lot of things in nature, don't let em die.

I know the implications and I'm not giving up my iPhone. Let the world burn.

I hate wasps, and dis like bees. But bees have their spot in this world and I understand that - so this is not good news.

No bees, no pollination= limited plant life=no herbivores=no carnivores.

Yeah, eventually it could trigger a domino effect of mass extinction. I'm sure we would circumvent this if it ever came down to it though. It wouldn't be the preferred method of course, but we could "fix" it I am sure....at a huge cost.

This way theyll adapt and evolve.

Thing is animals evolve over a very long period of time. This is all happening very quickly and is very devastating. I doubt bees could adapt quickly enough.

I hope it is something else because there is no way people will give up their phones.

This. There's nothing 'natural' about the selection process here and given the rapid adoption of cell phone technology there is really no opportunity for the bees to adapt. I really hope something can be done about this because otherwise not only honey but much of the fruit and veg we consume is gonna start becoming VERY expensive to produce.
