Just curious what would happen if, say the USB2.0 DP/DM pins were damaged. Would a USB 3.0 device still function at full speed? I'm trying to read the USB spec docs, but no luck finding anything. I thought I remembered somewhere that USB3.0 and USB2.0 controllers are different chips on the same port.

Considering the extra pins present in a usb 3 plug do not have power, I am gonna say that the 4 pins from the standard USB plug are required.
