Aftermarket cooler!

Maybe he could RMA it, or if he is good with computers he could disassemble the cooler and remount it with some better quality thermal paste.

 

He downloaded EVGA Precision since his card is EVGA. He manually set it to 80% since that has a tolerable noise level and he will see how high the temp goes. Aftermarket coolers are spendy, and I have no experience changing a video card's heatsink.

 

And right now the back of his computer is about 2-3 inches from my bed. Could that affect the temperature because of the exhaust?

 

Have him change the location of the computer.. seems like hes not getting enough air.

 

Tell him to get a better case with more airflow.

 

He just built his computer after months of saving and buying parts. His case is the Rosewill Thor, so it has a 200mm fan blowing at it.

He did crank the fan speed to 80% manually and it's holding in the 60s.

 

MSI afterburner works wonders. Give it a shot.

 

Well the reference GTX 470 is a hot card. Combined with a high room temperature and crappy airflow it might overheat.

Was it set at 80% when it over heated? MSI Afterburner is good for setting fan profiles which will allow the fan to spin at 100% speed if needed.

GTX470 is an awesome card but it gets very hot. Best cooling I can think of for it is water cooling. that is what I did with mine. If water cooling isn't an option then look at getting good aftermarket heat sink that can get the temps down.

Like others have said, use MSI afterburner to set up a custom fan profile. Easy and intuitive, and quite a bit less noisy when not gaming. PS: Unwinder is probably one of my biggest computer heroes of all times.

I use this for my GTX 580, and it works great.

 

Custom fan profile, also try to re apply some new tim on there.

 

80% isn't going to cut it if it's hot in his room and his case has crappy airflow.
