I just grabbed the $150 HD4850 from BB. It idles at 80c !!!

Way too hot for my liking. I installed the hotfix but the temps are the same.

Anyone have any ideas?

These cards were apparently supposed to run quite hot. Although, 90c is still in the "safe" range. I would try what redsunx said, and remove the shroud and place a fan over the heatsink and see if that helps.

How is the fan noise at 40-50% on the 4850 by the way?

Actual its got 120 in 120 out and currently due to temp of card my side panel is off and my case is on its side so the heat can rise out of it.

I think its just a cruddy reference cooler. If you look into it most ATI cards are safe up to over 115c ! . And another thing to consider is that you do have a lifetime warrenty with VisionTek so if worse comes to worse replace it OR if you bought it @ BB exchange it in 14 days. I for one am waiting for reports of which aftermarket cooler will fit the card and will change it out along with some as5 or ceramique.

Of topic'ish: Has anyone noticed when you boot you PC that the fan Spins up to what i assume is 100% and 2 small leds on the back of the card light up freaks me out 0,<

You could just put another fan on it. This DuOrb keeps my overclocked (860Mhz) 3870 below 55C all the time. I'm very happy. Still having fan control problems with my other card and fighting with Sapphire over getting a BIOS to fix it. It kills your warranty to change the fan, but if heat is going to be the cause of a warranty issue, then you're better off just changing it and never having to RMA the card. I did have to RMA one of my 3870s (which is why you only see one graphics card in my avatar), it was the one without the DuOrb.

I have mine OC'ed to 700Mhz core and 1100 Mem, seems to run @ about the same temp 82c idle 91c load. I cant wait till Rivatuner or ati tool supports it . Its a beast of a card.

Does the old zalman 900cu fit on it? I've had this on my old 7900gt and this 8800gt. I have bios volted this card and even folding it never goes over 60. I love this cooler.

It even handled the old 7900gt with 1.55 volts to it.

well..atleast glad to see i'm not the only one with the card running at 80c idle.. does anyone know which of the pci exhaust fans would be good to help alittle until any of the aftermarket coolers are 'officially' announced to be compatible? although i think i'll order that arctic cooler Accelero anyway..
