It didn't fit...

So I got a new computer. A Dell. I know, I know, Dells make baby jesus cry. But it was a good deal.

I'm planning on playing Lord of the Rings Online, so I ordered a 7900GS to replace the integrated 6150. And it doesn't fit.

It's the right slot, PCIe, it's just too big. Wider than the damn computer. I probably should've realised this could be an issue, the C521 is a slimline case, but it just never entered my mind that that was something I had to worry about.

So, can anyone recommend a, well, narrower card? $100-$150 type price range would be ideal.

Thanks a bunch!

Unfortunately the only low-profile graphics card I know of it the 7300GT, which isn't that good.

Well if you don't mind doing it then go for it

Honestly dell = suckage for air circulation anyways.

So you will get better temps and will be able to put your card in

BTW that is an awesome card

Out of the box CPUs don't make Jesus cry, they make the people who bought them cry.

Did you get that weird-looking grey Dell XPS thing?

It's a slimline case, so the card won't even go in the slot, because it won't fit through the back panel to line up right. So it's not even a question of just leaving the case off, I'd be fine with that. It won't go in at all.

for reference

I'd just cut a line down where the card is going to poke out and figure some way of securing it and keeping it from shorting and call it good. Also, take pictures so we can giggle.

Guys... his case is this one, on the right:

For comparison, standard ATX cases which are wide enough to fit most PCI-E cards are the one to the left.

It clearly doesn't fit a non-low-profile graphics card.

*EDIT*

AKAeric... the case you posted is the standard dell case

Yeah, the picture I originally posted was kinda small so I got a bigger one but I noticed it was the full size one so now its back to the small form factor one.

...What?

Anywho. Going with Dell was your first mistake. Going with a low-profile case was your second.

the card should only be as wide as one pcie slot... depending on the 7900GS card you have its probably 7 inches or so long and the standard hight of a ATX computer case...

so, what is it? to tall? to long or to wide??

It's actually not "too long" or "too wide", relatively speaking its "too tall"... kinda like a CPU cooler that's "too tall" for a case [mobo -> case clearance]

Then you get the fun of fitting a proprietary mobo in an ATX case. My advice, buy a case and be prepared to buy a mobo too. Then repeat after me:

"I will not buy desktop computers from mega-manufacturers ever again, I swear it."

You'll be happier in the long run. And you'll get more machine for less money, and with less proprietary software.

I know, I know. It's been like 10 years since I've done any of this stuff, I was trying to ease my way back into it. Looks like that didn't really work!

Both.

I can't stand those "special toolbars" and various other "helpful" programs those people embed into their products. And of course, they sell "recover disks" instead of clean copies of Windows, so even if you want that crap off your computer you're SOL.

The good news: all this stuff is much easier now than ten years ago. You don't even need to open your case and swap jumpers to OC any more!
