Possibly the dumbest or Awesomest cooling Idea

So since liquid helium is the coldest coolant there is I thought what if you could recycle the Helium so it wouldn't have to go through K tanks left and right.
So I found the parts to make the most awesome phase change unit ever.
Using 5 PT415 Pulse tube Cryorefridgerators to re-liquify the helium. http://www.cryomech.com/PT415.php
and A regular LN2 evaporator tube cooler
Sounds over kill but imagine -230C as a max temp
And it only uses 53kW of power.

53kW plus all the heat and not to mention the costs and time of building such a thing (if it was even possible) are so not worth it, its not even funny.

Would take a madman to really believe this will ever work.

you rang?

I'll say this, theoretically, it should work. However, in practice it is anything but practical.
My dad works on MRI machines(which are cooled with liquid helium), and ANY stray gasses causes nothing but nightmares(they freeze and jam up the system). Also, if you should try this, be sure to have a blowoff setup just in case. If the helium boils too fast for the refrigeration unit to keep up with, you could have a bomb on your hands, and the blowoff will be your only safegaurd.

My question is this: at 53,000W (or 81.54 times your power supply's rated max).....is it worth powering? I'm not saying you need a PSU to power it, don't get me wrong. I'm just wondering: with all the heat that thing will generate and all of the power it will draw, is it worth running for more than a little bit of benchmarking? Also, is the cost worth the few benchmarking sessions you'll be doing?

If you have the cash, and you think it's worth it: DO IT, AND POST PLENTY OF PICTURES!!!! I THINK THIS LOOKS INCREDIBLE, AND IT COULD TOTALLY WORK!!! However, I'm just commenting on the practicality. Also: +1 to the blow-off valve. Pressure is DANGEROUS.

The gains that would be had from such a set-up would be nothing more than bragging rights

yo look i got my 990x up to 6.5ghz

dude! no way!

yup

'dozer got up to 8.5ghz...

*powers on LHe equipementt*

*buys a BD proc*

dude I got 8.6ghz

dude! no way!

*evil grin*

yes, i got that anyways, see my reply ^ up there.

absolutely. I head there are some university's that have this equipment (or i could be completely wrong and thinking of another similarly improbable device.

wait.. how do you get something cold enough to make LHe in the first place?

haha :shakes:

I was told that if a piece of hardware is actually too cold like that that it won't even work... was i told wrong? lol

Unless there is a cold bug... why wouldn't it work?

He wasn't entirely wrong. There is a reason you don't see those runs with LHe done on Intel chips.... That's because the vast majority of them have what's known as a coldbug. There are some Gulftowns (980x - 990x) that don't have one, or at least not one found with LN2 temperatures, but as far as I know no one has tried one of those with LHe. Add the fact that there are a lot of components around a CPU socket on a motherboard that don't have such tolerances to temperature and you can actually coldbug your motherboard as well.

So your friend wasn't really that off on his claim. He just needed to make it more specific.

@ OP
May I suggest just going with LN2 instead of LHe? This would make thing much easier. Hell; you could buy one of these units here and have LN2 on tap at your disposal.

This is my dream, wonder how much they go for? Probably against 30 or 40 enviromental/municipal/federal regulations but what they don't know can't hurt them.
