Microsoft pushed out its Windows 10 Build 14942 to Windows Insiders today. Although the latest build contains several improvements, it will result in higher RAM usage for most users.

The End Of Svchost
Microsoft started to use grouped service host processes (svchost.exe) with the introduction of Windows 2000 as a method to conserve available memory. Microsoft continues to use svchosts today, but it isn't as necessary because the amount of RAM in typical computers has significantly increased.

A key feature of Build 14942 is the end of svchosts on systems that have more than 3.5GB of RAM installed. Instead, each service will run as a separate process. Microsoft said that this would increase service reliability, and it will increase transparency because you'll be able to see which services are running. It will also increase RAM usage somewhat, however, which could have a negative impact on devices with only 4GB of memory.
Am I being convinced ?

Thank God for the end of svchost.

I must question why 3.5GB was the cutoff INB4 HILARIOUS AND ORIGINAL 970 JOKE XDand not 4GB+1 byte. Then again, I think Windows has actually gotten lighter since Vista in terms of resource usage, so it shouldn't be a problem.
Probably because of shared memory between cpu and igpu. On pretty much all the lower-middlerange laptops with 4gb ram that I prepare for our customers, task-manager says there's 3,5gb ram available

Kinda. This is how an APU looks on Windows 7 in resmon.exe:

Windows is detecting 8192MiB (= 8GiB) total, but a little over 2GiB is "hardware reserved." BIOS settings for the VRAM explain 2048MiB reserved, though 63MiB are unaccounted for. Task Manager does show 6081MiB available though, meaning everything except hardware reserved.

I assume that, if I were to upgrade to Windows 10, then this would be considered 8GiB and not 5.9GiB for the purposes of removing svchost. Obviously either amount would qualify, but what if I only have half the memory? I guess we'll figure it out when the update rolls out, won't we?

EDIT: Though it says it's using 37% the physical memory. So maybe it does neglect the hardware reserved value? I'm not sure. If you've got 4GB and integrated graphics and are having memory issues, it might not be a bad idea to give them more memory so svchost comes back if this is true.

Well, at least there is a good reason for it.

So when I actually can Ctrl+alt+Del if a full screen program crashed & it wont crash the OS?

I got room to spare for the moment..

Waiting for the people that hate microsoft, to get in here and start crying that this part of the system was removed.

I am glad svchost has finally died, what a terrible thing it is.

Yay. When will this come to the masses?

You beat me to it.

Another patch implemented in the last 10 days lets you remove the pre installed apps. I noticed the windows hate brigade was mum on that little nugget.

Finally SVChost is over.

Those apps should not come preinstalled in Enterprise so my hate for Win Spy Beta (permanent beta) has not diminished.

So you want them to complain about something good?

I can understand the people who dislike the massive telemetry that cannot be disabled unless blocked from your router, but yeah, windows hate brigade!!

Sparked my interest to search for some numbers about windows 10 in the enterprise world. Wonder if any very large companies have adopted this OS, I assume it's going to be a low number since most companies can't afford to lose stability and large scale upgrades aren't the easiest of tasks.

well its for systems with 3.5gb or more. and doesn't necessarily mean slower especially if it can re allocate. so a 2gb machine should be unaffected if they aren't lying or wrong.
