AMD's new flagship Radeon R9 290X will no longer require CrossFire fingers to operate in multi-card configuration. Instead only PCI-Express slots will be required to make the cards run in such combination.

According to previous leaks this new approach would eliminate most of the frame pacing problems for which AMD was criticized since the topic became popular. However AMD went a step further and decided it would be a good idea to eliminate the necessity of the a separate CrossFire connection. It was possible since PCI-E interface is already capable of delivering enough bandwidth for multi-gpu communication.

The new slide supposedly leaked from AMD Reviewers Guide for R9 290X revealed that this card will scale much better than expected. The R9 290X CrossFire configuration will deliver up to 2.0x the performance of the single card. There is no game on the list that would not scale lower than 1.8x, but we are more than sure that these games were chosen here for a reason.

Additionally to that we have a chart with all the frame rates listed. I updated it with the CrossFire to single-card comparison.

Pro: This is awesome for all competitive performance and pricing. This is going to be one of the best new card seasons in quite a while.

Con: We are all wondering who is going to blink first, AMD or Nvidia with a released NDA and actual specs. Nvidia just joined the party oh 1 day ago with the 780TI and I'm wondering if we'll actually see detailed specs from them first. AMD is pissing everyone off with their shallow marketing. How long are they going to drag this out. Black Friday?

Very nice indeed. This is usually the case with CFX scaling.

Does anyone know why this is so?
Well that sux. Does SLI work windowed?

Yeah I would totally pay 150 dollars extra for less performance we are getting a lot of info on these cards and BF4 will launch the 31th so better wait it out.

it is worth the wait

This is a big problem for me, forcing me to go Nvidia after all. And I really like what I'm seeing when I look at 290x.

EDIT: and even for SLI I'm getting contradictory info.
Why do you want to run it that way?
What is confirmed to work is an accessory monitor to put your windows on you want to have beside it. (that also works for Nvidia)

who plays on windowed mode? and the purpose of it is?

A lot of people who use more than one monitor. Purpose is to be able to mouse over and access content on side monitors (for example, while playing a MMO) without the game on the main screen getting minimized.

This way the game is still on the center screen while I can check forums, quest tips, maps, chat or do whatever I want on my sidescreen.

I can't do that if I run full screen.

EDIT: plus you use windowed borderless, so you don't get any borders. It's like full screen, but it's not

But I wouldn't jump on the hype train without knowing how smooth this is. There will probably be a few reviews in a few weeks time who thoroughly test R9 290X CF with FCAT etc.
AMD really hyped it up in those slides that the 290 and 290x would be doing incredibly well while the rest of the 2XX series would have to wait until the second release of the frame metering patch with fixes for higher resolutions and DX9 and openGL

I cannot be sure ofc. I would be VERY HAPPY if I could use cfx in windowed mode.

CFX has been like this for generations, including the 7xxx series. Therefore, I would have to hear some news about it being different this time around, before I assume it is going to work.

So, while I would like it to work, I can't see where your optimism comes from.

Good news to hear scaling and frame pacing improvements.

Now lift NDA rather than trickle info and come out with the cards already.
