Facebook today announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR, Inc., the leader in immersive virtual reality technology, for a total of approximately $2 billion. This includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock (valued at $1.6 billion based on the average closing price of the 20 trading days preceding March 21, 2014 of $69.35 per share). The agreement also provides for an additional $300 million earn-out in cash and stock based on the achievement of certain milestones.

Curious to see how this plays out... I'm kind of sad

Immediate reaction is "What?!"

But besides Farmville in 3D, I'm wondering what Facebook plans to do with it. Unless it just wants to profit from the success it expects Oculus to achieve, I don't see how it aligns with their existing service.

This does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

400Ms and a few Bs in stock. I'll take that deal everyday and leave the PC gaming world in my dust.
Most likely though they'll continue to work on it, now with more capital to back it.

This "should" be good but awful if it dies in the has of Facebook.

I can see it now.

You have your Oculus on, then you start getting Facebook popups via a special addon.

Well...
Hello Valve?

I'm excited to announce that we've agreed to acquire Oculus VR, the leader in virtual reality technology.

Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. For the past few years, this has mostly meant building mobile apps that help you share with the people you care about. We have a lot more to do on mobile, but at this point we feel we're in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences.

This is where Oculus comes in. They build virtual reality technology, like the Oculus Rift headset. When you put it on, you enter a completely immersive computer-generated environment, like a game or a movie scene or a place far away. The incredible thing about the technology is that you feel like you're actually present in another place with other people. People who try it say it's different from anything they've ever experienced in their lives.

Oculus's mission is to enable you to experience the impossible. Their technology opens up the possibility of completely new kinds of experiences.

Immersive gaming will be the first, and Oculus already has big plans here that won't be changing and we hope to accelerate. The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this.

But this is just the start. After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face -- just by putting on goggles in your home.

This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.

These are just some of the potential uses. By working with developers and partners across the industry, together we can build many more. One day, we believe this kind of immersive, augmented reality will become a part of daily life for billions of people.

Virtual reality was once the dream of science fiction. But the internet was also once a dream, and so were computers and smartphones. The future is coming and we have a chance to build it together. I can't wait to start working with the whole team at Oculus to bring this future to the world, and to unlock new worlds for all of us.
Actually.... this might not be so bad.

Gods damn it Oculus. You had so many millions in VC and and you sell out to Facebook? Why?

I don't think we'll just see Facebook minigames on this. They could keep this completely separate from their social media service.
I am going to hope and trust that this is what Palmer agreed to. I don't see him willingly giving up his dream for millions before CV1, and he best spend this money ASAP on getting access to custom parts *cough*panels*cough* and getting eye-tracking and foveated rendering nice and quickly.

I'll withhold judgement until I see exactly what powers Oculus traded for this, but this announcement killed my hype in one fell swoop.

P.S. Zuckerburg, assuming you are just providing lots of funding, you better not stick a Fb logo anywhere on the Rift.

1) Millions in VC vs $2bn from Facebook. Your argument falls flats on its face there.
2) The VCs probably had considerable influence in the decision to sell. VCs aren't there just to help companies get started. They're in it to make money. Acquisition by a huge company is the jackpot.

facebook & OR can go die in a fire now.

So glad I didn't put an order in for DK2 the other day.

I'll stick to my UHD setups thank you very much. Now we just need 1440p or higher 3D monitors, trackIR5 does everything OR can do in terms of head tracking,.

This.

I doubt Facebook wants to interrupt with the design process for now. Maybe in a few years after the consumer edition is released, we will see shovelware/facebook crap. For now, I think it's a way for Facebook to earn more revenue, and a miracle for the owners of Oculus.

The good thing, is that this gives them a huge financial back to allow them to more development, to make other things with it (like VR to doctors, classrooms, unmanned aircrafts and so on).
The bad thing, is that with Facebook history, well... you never know.
I'm on a fence, but this might be a good thing in general. So I wouldn't be pessimistic right away. But, who knows...

no, this does not mean RIP to OR. It is just lame because most of us have grown to hate facebook, hell some of us deleted our facebook accounts over 10 years ago.

This is good for OR. REASONS:

More R&D money.
Larger audience.
i guess it can give it more exposure to developers, but I question that part of it as pretty much every creative house across the world has multiple OR DK1/DK2's.

free advertising to millions of people.

People should have seen this coming when the VC (venture capitalists) & ex-EA CEO joined up.

I don't like the idea of Facebook monitoring what i'm playing/doing online. We already have enough monitoring redundancies.

you know damn well they are going to stick eye trackers, blood pressure trackers, heart beat monitors, breathing monitors, & who knows what else into the kits now.
