Here's a way to put it simple: headphones are made to have a particuliar sound over a long period of time. Plastic, as nearly everyone knows, tends to be more flexible after being bend a lot of time. So the goal of burning-in headphone is to acheive the same result than using the headphones for 5-6 months. It causes the same amount of wear to the driver, but most of the time the cable dies before it. And it makes a more consistent job since music doesn't have the same amount of frequencies being played all the time, while White-Noise, nearly used by everyone for breaking-in, is a more constant sound, making the burn-in balanced across all the driver (burning-in with bass heavy music will make the bass break-in faster than the mids and highs, and may give an imbalanced sound).
Some headphones use harder plastic, other softer, so burn-in depends on wich headphones you use. Perfect example: MEElectronic M6. Out of the box they were terrible with cymbals and bass drowning everything. After 2 days of burn-in they were way more balanced, with the bass and treble setling down.

More like people trying to comfort themselves after realizing that they made the wrong purchase by telling themselves it will sound good after broken-in, and sure enough some magical psychological effect happens in their brain and all of a sudden it sounds a lot nicer.

People tend to get used to a new type of sound and when they do, they perceive it as good-sounding.

I watched the video, and there're two incorrect guesses so it's busted, it's a fail, sorry.

Or just a simple fact that nothing is perfect at start. Same as when you buy an ATV: you shouldn't ride it to it limits until a month of what we call in french "trimming". When parts are new, they need to be worn a bit in order to prevent suddent breaks. In the case of the ATV it can lower it's lifespan by a good 2-3 years if you disregard the "trimming" period. Nearly the same principle as the headphones, but instead of breaking they just become more imbalanced.

Because an internal combustion engine functions the same as a headphone driver? This is a horrible analogy; you clearly know nothing about how a headphone driver works or how it is manufactured.

Bad analogy, maybe. But to the point that I know nothing about how a standard dynamic driver works, absolutely not. We even made some during science classes and we had to try different materials and wires sizes for the speaker coil itself to make them the more performing possible.

Did he do 10 trials and get 8 out 10? Can't watch the video at work.
