The pc that I'm having problems with is the one below in my sig. When booting the pc comes on for about 2-3 seconds and then turns off.

The only way for me to fix this problem is:
  • flip the switch on the back of the psu
  • wait 5-10 minutes
  • then power back on
After the above steps the pc will be fine for another week or so then the same thing happens. The pc is NOT overclocked

Any ideas why this is happening?

Not when its giving me problems, but right now it's running fine. So yes I should be able to get to the bios right now. When it's working fine I can sit in the bios and view settings. Although in a few more days I might have to go through the above steps again.

I hope it's not the psu again. The old psu died about 2 months ago so this one isn't very old.

If it is the psu why does it work fine sometimes?

well no matter what its a hardware problem and there are only a handful of things it could be.

the first thing i would check is to make sure the heat-sink is properly attached clear of dust and debris, and check to make sure the fan spins. if a heat-sink is not properly attached, the cpu will overheat and shutdown in seconds, then you got to wait for it to cool down.

next i would do a close visual inspection of the motherboard, and and smell for that unmistakable smell of bad news. keep an eye out for the larger capacitors, they are for the mobo VRM's check to make sure they are not swollen or discolored or a black oily residue. i used to have that exact mobo and that's what happened

then check to make sure the power connectors are properly seated on the motherboard and other components too. just unplug them and plug them back in.

then you could test your memory but i doubt it would help

the only thin left is the PSU.... (but only if its not the motherboard)

First try resetting CMOS, then load BIOS defaults, then manually change your BIOS settings. If you still have a problem, it's probably your PSU.

Antec PSU FTL.

When running fine the pc will run for days/weeks until restart so I pretty sure its not an overheating issue.

I need to look over the motherboard, it is almost 5 years old. Im prolly gonna end up getting a new mobo and cpu if i cant figure out the problem.

Tested the memory thats not the issue
