Hey guys and gals.
I've been out of the loop for quite a bit now (kinda dropped out when FX series released)

ANYWAYSSS....

i've got a 965BE and i'd like to upgrade.
My rig is primarily used for gaming so i see no point in going for anything more than a quad.

so basically i wanna know what the best gaming AMD CPU that's out right now.

MoBo: ASUS Crosshair V Formula (AM3+ socket)

thanks in advance guys

If you don't want anything more than a quad, that's really the best you can get right now. The only upgrades I see would be:

- FX 8350 when it comes out (not exactly optimized for gaming)
- A Thuban [1045T is currently available on Amazon] (it's a six-core)
- Phenom II 980 (really wouldn't be too much of an upgrade.

I also have a 965, so I'm kind of in the same spot. That's just how I see it.

^^This.

If you stumble on a 960T that's not expensive you may get 4.2-4.4 out of it as an X4, but still not that big of an upgrade and you know how it goes with OC, no guaranty you'll get over 4.0.

Your only true upgrade from there that is a quad core is an intel CPU. All of the FX-bulldozer CPU's that are quad cores are a step backwards compared to the phenom II line.

For AMD, you have to get a 6 or 8 core in order for it to truly be a step up. Also, I don't recommend an FX 6-core CPU either. If you want to move to a better AMD CPU, you need an FX 8-core.

if your planing to play CPU heavy games like BF3 get a 8 core FX chip.

no, just checking in
getting bored with tweaking this one
i've pretty much gone in and out of this chip with a microscope
there's only a few MINOR things i can learn from as far as the 965 goes
like i said in an earlier post, i have a rock solid 4.0 and am close to a solid 4.2 (which is definitely the ceiling)

i mean if a 6 core chip would out perform this one in gaming enough to upgrade then i'd buy it
i just haven't seen anything to tempting to go and buy

Aside from boredom then, there's no reason for you to upgrade; a 965BE @4GHz+ is still plenty for gaming.

There really isn't much to do but wait for PD.

Going X6 right now won't reap anything substantial (unless you encode and stuff) since a quad is plenty for games

Best advice ever would be to switch to Intel

Piledriver will hit the market in about a month and so my suggestion for you would be to wait and grab the FX-83XX. Early tests show an average performance gain of 10% across a number of single- and multi-threaded applications. Gaming performance remains to be seen but I would say, without doubt that we will see an improvement. How much of an improvement and whether or not it will catch Sandy Bridge may be a stretch but will it offer superior performance to current AMD processors? I think so

As said before, his 4GHz quad isn't holding him back much in games at the moment.
