You really don't have much choice right now. The only board I've seen with DDR3 compatibility is a very low end ASUS board. It's suspected that more DDR3 boards will come out when the non K variants come out.

Why wouldn't you go DDR4 is the real question?

I think he means he already has some DDR3 he could reuse, vs. buying new DDR4. It's a fair question for budget conscious folks, but I'm not sure someone on a budget should be looking at the newest, shiniest stuff on the block anyway.

Indeed.
New platform, expensive parts, but not utilizing one of the only reasons to go Z170 is just inexplicable to me.

DDR4 isn't even that expensive, you can get an 8GB 2133mhz kit for the same as an 8GB kit of DDR3, about $50. I was surprised when I saw that because I bought X99 when it launched and paid almost $250 for 16GB, it has come way down.

Just another angle. Personally my ears pricked a bit when I heard about possible DDR3 compatibility, if youre on a budget not having to spend out straight away extra on RAM is nice. It would let me pick up a CPU and MOBO and then RAM a little ways down the line. That way its also more possible to pick up the faster DDR 4 rather then the zero to little benefit 2133 stuff I'd be forced to consider if I was trying to get it all at once right now.

Of course you can say why not wait a while save and get it all at once, but it's always nicer to have new toys right here and now.

Us paupers should stick to APU's and Pentiums, eh

I kid, I kid, but budgets can vary in size and the reasons for them can differ is all I'm saying

If you're going to get a 6700k for gaming, you need some high speed DDR4 to realize the full potential of the processor. DDR3 would probably hold it back.

I didn't mean to sound elitest there, if it came off that way my bad. Not dissing budget builds, just pointing out that "enthusiast" and "budget" aren't usually used in the same sentence.

No worries, I guessed you didnt mean it quite that way. But if I'm to get pedantic about semantics (I'm definitely a poet) then an enthusiast isn't necessarily defined by the amount of money they have available to throw at their rig. I would argue most people have a 'budget' even if it means going SLI 980tis instead of Titan X's or 'only' getting the 5930k/5820k instead of a 5960x. Or sticking with your DDR3 and upgrading to the newest platform to have something new to play with while you wait a few weeks to get a better RAM kit.

Anyway apologies for my brief derailment there. I do agree its better to go with the DDR4 in the end, I just dropped into the thread and I'm in the position of wanting to upgrade now and not wanting to pay the atrocious Nordic/European tax on components right now/ deal with overseas shipping in case of problems

Cheapest 16GB kit is 242 Euro

You may run into some issues with DDR3 support and older chips, as z170 is DDR3L if you have memory (for example my HyperX) that needs 1.65v it looks like you will need to replace it anyways, or try to overvolt the memory controller :-/.

i will be doing with DDR4, since its finally affordable and faster than my current memory.

If you make the move, then do it right. DDR4.
