I'm installing a new XP Home with SP2 (brand new OEM) and I'm on part 4 of 5 during the fresh Windows install and it stops and tells me:
"Some files on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 are needed.
Insert Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD into the drive selected below then click ok."

Copy files from D:\\I386.

There is no 2nd disc, and the OEM says XP Home Edition with SP2 (single disc).
Is there supposed to be a 2nd disc?
Only a single disc was in package!

Do I RMA or am I missing something?

I believe there is only 1 disc.

I Did browse the disc but didn't find the proper file so I hit cancel.
The program recontinued but left me with an incomplete OS (lacking system tools, paint, notepad, etc....)
Still confused.

How can I scrub my hard drive to try again as I cant overwrite the existing install (tried already).

Reformat the HD to start fresh again. Is there an option to install SP2 or not? If so, I would just install the OS at first, and then install SP2 from online later.

No option to reformat the hard-drive to start again.
An option to repair it doesn't help.
The partially installed OS doesn't give me any tools. Im lost.
No option to install SP2 either.
I think I got a damaged disc.

Are you able to boot into Windows at least? Well if you can, then go to My Computer and right click on your HDD's disc (usually C), and click on Format. Reboot the PC to start over again.

Will give it a go, thanks. I'll be back in awhile.

Tried reformatting but wasn't allowed. Bummer.
Went to my other computer and searched drive C in Windows folder and found I386 in Cache file, copied to CD for other machines OS system specifing file, but to no avail.
Must be damaged XP CD, time for RMA.
Thanks for the help. Now if I can figure how to wipe my new HDD clean.

wiping it clean is really easy to do and while your rmaing your cds.. keep the os installed.. goto www.softwarepatch.com and install the updates you can get sp2 from here and you can also use windows updates to get missing files as well.. but if you desires to wipe clean the harddrive.. simple use a dos boot disk and when your booted up type format c: (or what ever your system drive is that your using) /q and hit enter and confirm it.. this will do a quick format and just clean the drive instead of doing it for 10 to 15 minutes or you could back up that image of your xp and browse the net for how to make an xp cd with sp 1 and 2 on it .. and just add the files to your image you backed up reburn it and install it that way.. after all you own the license to the software right .. right..

My new build is missing OS files for ethernet and various other programs. The above link keeps timing out on my other comp. Appreciate the help, but I've already got RMA #s for both OS and HDD (so I'm waiting a few weeks) to start from scratch. My HDD can't do much without complete system tools.

why are you rmaing the harddrive also ??? is that broken too

The new OS sent to me was OEM (bad disk).
Reinstalled it a dozen times. The HDD will not allow over-writes or reformats because my initial install was partially incomplete (cache file i386).
Long story, short: RMA . Damaged disc, damaged install to HDD. Tried to rewrite OS with an older set with SP2 but it won't take.
Now that I've got RMA #'s, I'll just start fresh.
Still have 5 other computers around here anyway, so no biggie.

your hard drive is not messed up.. I'm betting on it if you take the time you can fix it rather easy.. first all did you try to format it with a boot disk because if your in windows and you try to format the system drive it wont let ya thats like shooting yourself in the head worse case is it wont let you format so instead you just fdisk it simple remove the partition and make a new one and then format that.. we are talking 10 - 20 minutes to fix the drive .. or how many days to mail it how many days to process the rma and how many days to send it back.. but like ya said you have 5 other computers

if you go to this link you can get a copy of a program called "Slate"......

create an MS-DOS boot floppy
create folder on the floppy called "Slate"
copy the "slate.com" file into the slate folder.
reboot pc.

when it boots from floppy into DOS type:

a:\\
cd slate
slate 1
(where 1 is for HDD 1....if you want to slate your second HDD use "slate 2")

this will completely wipe the HDD all data and partitions on it will be lost (writes zeros across your HDD)

do this then try reinstalling....provided you get everything off it that you want to keep.

I JUST REMEMBERED WHAT HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I WAS INSTALLING PRO WITH SP2.

The files that the installation was actually looking for were not on the XP disc. The files it was looking for were actually on the driver cd that came with my motherboard. When it prompts you for the SP2 files, try that disc. I dont know why it did that but thats what happened.

Tried with the mobo disc at that point, no go.
Also made a CDROM with the i386 files from my other computer but it can't be accessed.
I went as far as purchasing a brand new RETAIL XP Home OS and still have the same exact problem (2 months later).
I think I'm gonna get out the 20# sledgehammer very soon.
Totally frustrated with MICROSOFT.

Fixed: The problem was with the optical drive not reading the disc properly.
The next didn't read it properly either, but the 3rd did.
OS installed properly. Thanks all.
