I'm all for building pc's from leftover parts. I think I did a good job on my E2180:

http://www.overclock.net/system.php?i=57856

Free:
E2180 Pentium Dual Core 2ghz - Leftover when I bought my q6600 to upgrade my e6400 which I used to upgrade my son's system

EVGA 8800 GTS - sent to me as a freebie when a OCN member upgraded to a 5770

Seagate 7200.10 320 gig sata - pulled from my q6600 rig when I installed the samsung f3 and put the wd 640 aaks in raid 0 instead of the 320x2

LITE-ON 20X DVD±R 12X DVDRAM - still have another of these not in a system from when I had 2 in my q6600 then pulled them and had 5 hd's at one time in it

Antec 300 watt - Pulled from my brothers old Athlon XP 2100+ system

HannsG 19" widescreen - was my sons until I gave him my 22" Viewsonic when I started using the q6600 on my 37" HDTV with wireless kb+mouse

Purchased:

$50 combo from OCN member:
Gigabyte EG31M-S2 - won't overclock AT ALL but its stable and averages to $25
2 x 1gig Crucial Ballistix - not tried to overclock but its 2 gigs of stable memory averaging to $25

Rosewill FB-01 - $10 shipped for a case, not bad at all

OSWin7 x64 $10 for a validated key from ocn member

And my 3dmark06 is sweet at 8048 (need to rerun with my gpu oc'd)

Not bad for $70 out of pocket

ya i collect old junk hehe have a drawer with wires for whatever, couple old vid gards 1 AGP GeForce 6200, and a ATi x800 PCIe. Then ya 2 3200+ amd single core cpu. Stock heatsinks out the ars but i think everyone has that good for modding custom NB heatsinks or somethin. You can sometimes find some good stuff in those recycle places people dont always know what they are throwing out

But on personal not got my cpu to 2.6GHz at DDR433(216.7MHz) running stability test now (LinX) Temps getting up there hiting 64c on one of the cores 60c on other..

I still have some socket A cpus, like a 2100+ and a 2600+ i believe.

Tons of SDRAM lol

Broke my heart when I threw out a AMD K62 400 mhz last summer at the insistance of a now ex gf :-(

found that 280x10 wasnt running correctly, so dropped it back down to 270x10, been running Prime95 for about an hour now, and hasnt gone over 68oC, not the cooliest i know, but only a fraction over what they say for max temp. Should run abit cooler (hopefully) when the new heatsink/fan arrives.

Lets see a pcmark score with your current 2.7ghz and gpu

I'm sure it'll destroy the P4

ok confused now, i thought i'd fiddle around with my ram, so i took 2 sticks out, leaving me with 2x512 dual, or so i thought, when i took two out and rebooted, it only detected it as 512 single sided 64bit, but when i put the other 2 back in, it read it again as 2gb dual 128bit??? wt..

all up and running in the case now, my old girl is finally retired (for now lol) but it's suprising on how the temps rise as soon as u put in a case, went from 25 idle to bout 40, hopefully this will all be fixed soon that as soon as my cooler arrives in the mail, that and actually putting thermel paste on hehe.

3dmark and pcmark obviously proove the system is better, but i dunno, in some areas it just seems to lack where the pentium gained, i dno, maybe just new pc jitters lol.

took me like half hour to load the photobucket site (went ova d/l again down to 64kbs) so i gave up trying to upload the pics, but just scored just shy of 19,000 on 3dmark03, im aiming for 20,000 but not counting on it

cant run pcmark cause i need pc updates and cant do them cause of d/l limit, its a viscious cycle lol.

one little hiccup i found that, unless i drop the oc down to like 250mhz or less, my pc will not always boot, ill get to post then reboot, post reboot, the on the 3rd kick it usually goes, other than that it runs like a champ.

Any clue on the post/reboot?

The Athlon will be a much better option. It's still nothing even mid range by today's standards, but in its day....those Athlons were absolute king. That's a decent enough single core setup, now get to overclocking that Athlon!!
are you on crack?

jw because a 2.5ghz 3200+ will be maybe a p4 4ghz. not to mention as you overclock, you will need to lower the Hyper transport bus. that means that the better clock-for-clock then the intels is not so significant anymore.

lol im not bashing you tho, just wondering
