Hey guys, I'm looking at updating my bios on my board. Anyway, any ideas with this board? Hard, Easy, Troublesome?

I'm using the MSI utility Live Update 5 and I'm worried since it said I need to have a copy incase it doesn't load it right... and I've noticed people saying that flashing can cause bricking of the MoBo.

Any advise?

btw I'm doing this b/c I think I might have a problem with the bios I got because it keeps coming up with the CMOS Checksum Error, I've pretty much cleared all the other possabilities like resetting to default, the battery on the mobo, etc. So I'm left with the bios... any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to OCN.

You have a great mobo there, I owned one few years ago and was very good. You can use Live Update without problems, worked for me in an easy way and with excellent results.

Regarding your problems, I think that you need a new battery for the mobo.

thanks, I'm just iffy on starting the install of the bios with Live update, b/c if it fails to install I'm up the river so to speak

Also, I put a new battery in it. That was the first thing I did to try to correct the error. it was a CR2032 battery I do believe.

As far as you follow the steps in the proper order, you won't have any problem. Yeah, that's the correct battery, do you still have the error?

Yes I am still having the errors about every other time I start my system up. When I push f2 for the (load defaults) it starts up and when it gets the the windows loading screen it Blue Screens me and I have to go back threw it again. Then I push f1 to go to bios then f10 to save and continue (without doing anything) and it's fine.

Updated to the 1.0B Bios from MSI and it installed great. When it was restarting durn if it didn't give me a CMOS error while it was starting up... I was like NOOOOOOOO

Then It starts and I have the new bios... but it uninstalled my driver for my promise raid and I had to go digging for that on MSI's site. But I think I got is strait now.

If only I can figure why the cmos error almost ever time... urg

You have RAID, I must confess that RAID never work well for me in that mobo and I think that is part of the problem. Try to "load defaults settings" on BIOS.

I did my friend. This problem came up a good while after I had RAID. I don't believe that was the problem. Coincidentally I had to re-install almost all my drivers again to get things to work right.

At least now my mobo and windows is recognizing that I have a 940 BE instead of "processor unknown"

I really do wonder what is actually causing this CMOS error. Because I want to start OC'ing the thing a little and can't really do that since it will reset it every time.

Re-flash the BIOS and configure all options again (time, date and those stuffs)

I'll add you but for now I'm not playing (play with the partition table isn't a good idea lol) I have to download all my games again

I feel you. Had similar problem with my 500 gb drives i had. That's why I got raid now. my single 1Tera drive has my OP system on it... I got my games on the 2 1Tera raid drives. I didn't mess with the partition this time at all. Learned my lesson lol.

BIOS update should be done via MSI HQ USB Tool. There is a thread about it right here in this section few lines below.
NEVER update BIOS with Live blabla ,you don t really know what it will flash.
Download the the 1.B bios from the msi website ,download from msiforum the tool then flash the board.

Make sure your memory modules are fine as wasted ram modules can give all kind of strange errors.

LE: Drivers for Promise on W7 can be easily made by modding .Yiou will find MY guide here and on msiforum on how to make them.

The USB stick way is extremely simple ,if you have bootable USB stick handy of course.
But if you already installed 1.B BIOS you can stay cool ,no other BIOS will be released for that mobo ever again.
In case the Live utility flashed a older BIOS (which happens often) you can still think of using the USB way.
It s easier than it looks and safer in same time.

In case you get another MSI mobo don t forget to use the proper method ,as MSI does not have a socketed BIOS chip and they also not use dual BIOS
