GUIDE - how to remove fan blades

Right... i was there and i know there are going to be loads more people out there wanting to know how to remove the blades from the fans so they can change it with paint or leds etc...

this guide will tell you how to dissasemble them and reasemble them.

things you will need:

2 very small flat screew drivers.
clean or dirty coffee cup - your choice

Complete picture list

first of all take the fans and place the back facing towards you.

now remove the sticker

one the sticker is removed, remove the little rubber or plastic cap behind the fan. - you will need one of the smalle screw drivers for this

once the cap is removed it will look something like this.

now take the 2 small screew drivers and remove the small plastic clip. - please note is is very soft and can break easily.

now with the clip removed it will look like this.

turn fan around, and pull fan off.

now that the fans have been you can do what ever you want.

i would advise that if you are going to paint the frame tape up the centre part so no paint and chemicals get on to it.

once painted or doing what ever you needed to do , just do everything in revers.

asembly time

now you will need to assemble the fan. put the fan back into place.

one in place turn the fan over and place in on your dirty cup from your coffee and then place the plastic clip back into place. - not the cup or glass needs to be smaller than the fan housing. , so you are pressing on the fan blads.

once that is done place the plastic cap back on to the fan.

you can, if you want to replace the sticker back to hold the cap in place. it is advised so the cap will not go missing.

then you are done.

i never had one... i will ahve to find one and test it out and then let you know.

from what i have seen on all the fans, is they all are the same. there are some fans that you can actualy play with the amount of blades you want in them and swop them around etc.. (eg: they come with 8 blades you can remove the houseing with the blads and unclip the blades to only have 4 blades) now these i was looking into with my custom build but i have forgotten the name of them. they where like 16 pounds each.

sorry that is all i can say now.

i did a bit of reading and searching and this is what i came up with.

These bearings are a little different to removing blades from a dual or sleeve bearing.

That's for getting the mounting clips off but no cigar on removing the fan hub or bearing, I would strongly recommend against pulling them apart unless they are leaking oil, in that respect even Noctua consider them to be defective so an RMA to get a new fan would be advisable.

hi,
is it possible to disassemble a fan without ripping it sticker off?

because, I've recently really tempted to got my hand on the EBM-PPAST which sold at the local electronic supply store.
the fan was a refurbished one of course.
but having a fan which once was ripped apart was something definitely I want to avoid?

so are there any advices, to recognize which fan was a reassembled, and which one was salvaged with a decent condition?

the ones i have seem have all been from the back. where you have to rip the sticker off etc....

i have never seen a noctau so i can not comment there. i will have to find one and experement with it.

all the fans i have played with are the cheap ones you get for round 5 and 13 pounds and most of them hve been coolermaster and a few no name brands as well.

the fan you are talking about the EBM-PAPST i have googled and did some searching and the only thing that i can see is to strip it down you have to go from the rear as well. how it needs to be striped down and what type of retention clip it might have i am not to sure.

i have seen on some sirclips on some fan in the industrial application for fans also in the 120 and 140 mm size but never actualy stiped those as well.

also with rebuilding the fans i would recomend a good anti static oil (you get electrical oil and grease) so if it does touch the electrical parts it will not short out your circuits
