an image is an actual copy of a discs actual dir/sub directory make up. A clone essentially. And usually referred to as an iso image.

a rip of a video is compressed/non compressed variant of original format that is transformed into various media formats eg' mp4 etc.

That's my best take on it.

So which is best to use if you plan on putting it on a dvd?

I cannot answer this as it would be in breach of TOS mate, in terms of software/video piracy.

Use google to find the information you require, sorry.
 
last i checked its now legal to backup your DVDs for personal reasons but obviously illegal to share and sell/distribute.

your best option if your backing up a DVD or CD is to make an exact copy rather that converting the video file itself into a media format. use google to find a program.

just search for DVD/CD backup.

i had to make DVD copies of my films i made at film school so that everyone in our group could have a copy of our project for their portfolio. i did that so that noone would post the video file on youtube and make it public for everyone since it was made at school rather than independently since our school owns some rights to it since it was made for a class
