Suggestion... dont get the 2700k to start with... get the 2600k same processor for less $$... on topic... I have the ASRock z68 Extreme4 Gen3 and I love it... Overclocks well... tons of features... and just looks awesome... matched with 16GB ddr3 and 3Gfx cards... does wonders... ASRock has become a front runner in the motherboard industry in a lot of people's eyes including my own... I will get another ASRock before I even look at something else...

If your looking for SLI x16 x16 The one board that does it for sure is the ASROCK Extreme 7 Gen 3 board. That ASUS Maximus IV Extreme Z or P67 board only do x8 x8 in dual SLI configuration. In fact I am pretty certain that most, I am not saying all, but most p67/Z68 boards only do SLi x8 x8 in dual configuration.

Now if you plan on 3 GPU's then the Maximus IV p67/Extreme Z board is the way to go. it is the only ones that do X16 X16 X8 in triple SLI configuration. Most of the others do x8 x8 x8 with a couple doing x16 x8 x8. The ASROCK board mentioned above falls into this last category of x16 x8 x8.

The reason they can do this is the NF200 chip. Not everyone uses it though. ASUS and ASROCK do though.

Hope this helps.

gigabyte has all pci e lanes going through nf200.. so it will have 16x16 in sli..

also the giga will do 16 16 8 in tri..
however with dual cards, you will run into latency issues on the giga since it never bypasses the nf200. You will be better served for 8 8 for sli only (directly to cpu)

Here is the list of Gigabyte Z68 boards off Newegg. Single x16, dual x8. Some are x16 x8 x4 and even one or two are x16 x4

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627%2050001314%20600093976%20600158412&IsNodeId=1&name=Intel%20Z68

I do pay attention to these things because for me it is something I look for. That's why for me personally though the boards are fine the important pieces I look for I just don't find on Gigabyte. it's just a preference thing.

Every board maker out there has an emphasis on certain things be it over clocking, ports availability etc...

In all probability the boards that over clock the best are probably ASUS boards but there are plenty of competitors there.

From a gaming board perspective there are so many I don't know that anyone could say it's ruled by one company or not.

This is a list of all the Z68 boards regardless of price on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627%20600093976%20600158412&IsNodeId=1&name=Intel%20Z68

I realize you are in the UK so I only list them so you can go in and do your own comparisons of up to 5 boards and swap them in and out as you compare.

Personal opinion only: If i was to make the same choice and in fact i am I would either be going with the ASROCK Extreme 7 GEN 3 or the ASUS Maxims IV Extreme Z. That is my opinion only and it is based on my own research as I explored all those same boards in the list I gave you. My keys in looking were overclocking, PCIe slots and speeds and SATA III availability.

Only you can decide what is important to you in the list of features.

Hope it helps.

I'm in the same boat. I'm about to pick up the Asrock Extreme 7 gen 3 for 2700k. I'm looking to do SLI and right now the board is on sell at Newegg for 249.99. Was going to pick up the Asrock Professional Gen 3 but it's 10 dollars more. I like the layout of Asrock Extreme 7 more anyways....

Not to worry about PCI 3 and etc...Nothing is future proof...Just go with what you like and the price you can afford. By the time you want to upgrade I'm sure something will be out that is better and at a good price point...
