Hey guys. I just got my new rackmount chassis and I assumed that my Hyper 212+ would not fit. I decided to try anyways and surprisingly it is only a couple of MM too tall. If I cut the top of the heat pipes will that do anything to the cooler to make it perform worse? I've got some cutting bits for my dremel. Or is there a way that I could crimp them in with like wire cutters or something and then seal the top?

Thanks in advance.

At the hot interface within a heat pipe, which is typically at a very low pressure, a liquid in contact with a thermally conductive solid surface turns into a vapor by absorbing heat from that surface. The vapor condenses back into a liquid at the cold interface, releasing the latent heat. The liquid then returns to the hot interface through either capillary action or gravity action where it evaporates once more and repeats the cycle. In addition, the internal pressure of the heat pipe can be set or adjusted to facilitate the phase change depending on the demands of the working conditions of the thermally managed system.
From the definition of "heat pipe". It will destroy the cooler.

There's a special liquid or air inside the heat pipes which move the heat from the copper base through to the fins, cutting that will yield, very very bad results as stated above.

Well... that sucks. I don't really want to drill the case panel but I will consider it.

I guess the next question is what coolers would perform similar and cost about the same but would fit?

Thanks for all the answers so far.

Even just bending them would be bad, as it would affect the vacuum pressure inside (which affects the vaporization).

That looks like it would fit better, have you tried using a ruler and measuring the height..

Well the GeminII is 105MM tall and the Hyper 212+ is ~160MM which is about 4MM too tall. I like the GeminII because it looks like it would cool the RAM too.

$33.99 on Newegg right now.

edit: I looked at the C14. That's too much money. I've gotta build another server by the end of the month and I'd prefer to put that $50 towards it instead.

If it was me, I'd just swap coolers between your two sig rigs for now, put and put your 212+ up for direct trade for a gemini style cooler in the marketplace.
If I swap the coolers for now I'll run the stock Intel heatsink. I tried running one of the 920s 24/7 and I don't trust them to do that any more.

Before I got the NOCTUA ... I had the CoolerMaster GEMIN II S, that's a nice one too ... sit's low and wide, didn't clear my RAM, and thought the NOCTUA would, so bought it, but had to take the heatspeader off my Corsair Vegengance anyway in slot #1 ... but the GEMIN 2 is as decent a cooler as the Hyper 212+ and as budget friendly, might be your ONLY other real option.

Maybe you could go with a H60 or something, because it will hook up to the exhaust and doesn't come out at all.
Seems like your best bet for a small case, also i had a CM elite 430, the silver arrow came out on it, all i did was put the panel on, sure it pushed the panel a bit but only a few mm's.

Yeah it's looking that way. I'll order one in an hour or two if I haven't heard any better suggestions.

No CLC. I ran a 920 when I first built the system and it had build up around all the joints... I just don't trust them. Plus I'm not in front of it which means if it leaks I can't shut the system off immediately. I've actually been thinking of getting rid of my other 920 too...

The GeminII is only available in store and I don't have a Fry's here. I've pretty much got Newegg and Amazon.com.

Ok that is fair enough, also just saw what you said above, to be honest ram runs at 10W it really doesn't need cooling, it's all a marketing gimmick.
