Noticing my PS3 slim getting quite hot of late and ramping the fan way up even when just watching a movie. I've tried all the obvious things; moving it out of the cabinet (which has plenty of air anyway), standing it upright, cleaning it out etc. to no avail. Tired of the noise I pulled it apart and have cleaned the crusty TIM of the CPU and GPU.

Since the warranty is void now anyway I was considering cutting a hole in the top of the PS3 and ghetto mod mounting two vertical heatsinks. Trouble is the block on most heatsinks is just too small (see pics). Wondering how much cooling I'd sacrifice or if anyone knows of some kind of way to get better coverage. Maybe a way of making a block myself?

Old Cooler Master Hyper 212+ I found.

Cheers.

Cheers man.
Looks like he just slapped it on might give that a go.
Alternatively if I buy another fan/heatsink for the ps3 I could rip the block of that but then I'm cooling a CPU with a block that's using another block to cool it!

the block you are sitting that on is just a heat plate
you dont need to cover it

if you want further help with modding it up. i have done quite a few breakdowns and mods to some ps3 systems.
friends system.. didnt get to refine it before he took it home.

Nice, that was actually something else I was thinking of trying; cutting a hole above the fan.
I was also considering doing that above the PSU with two or three 10mm fans. There's nothing at all to cool it down and mine is getting freakin' hot!

Nice work btw.

if i had my heat gun before that first ps3, that thing would have looked much better.
all of that around the hole is epoxy i colored and formed for him.

the slims like the top run the fan over the gpu/cpu heat sink, that air then pushes threw the psu.

both ps3s are almost dead silent now.
actually so is the xbox in the external link.
