Dual Tower Cooler On A GPU?

Guys, has any mad person here thought of putting a NH-D14 or a Phanteks cooler on a GPU? The mod can be done with the Corsair H-Series and other models, so has anybody got the guts to design a GPU backplate capable of holding this beast up?

Even if I had the space and the correct orientation of the motherboard, I would not be brave enough to mount any Air cooler that tall.

Good luck getting an answer, though.

Maybe it is possible with the Prolimatech Genesis?

This is a terrible idea. The weight it would put on your PCI slot would be too much to bare. It would likely damage the card. Also, it would probably (if it was placed in one of the first slot of the motherboard, usually the one that is a full x16 lane) get in the way of your other PCI-E slots. Why even try? Just get an aftermarket air cooler like the AC Accelero Extreme that was actually meant to be used for a GPU.

I've seen pictures of heatsinks bodged on to GPU's for OC challenges (there was one on here with a GT520 or a 210 I think). For normal use it's a bad idea though. The orientation is wrong and the weight to much

I wasn't going to do it, but with the correct PCIe extenders, and nice sold backplate made out of thick steel, considering the GPU as horizontal, possible right?

Of course it is possible. Mostly anything is possible when you throw enough money at it.

not always true. you just don't know the proper application of tie wraps

with enough tie wraps, you can make any cooler "weightless"

personally i'm actually considering something along the lines of a thermalright macho120 due to the asymmetric heatpipe orientation. finding a mounting kit strong enough for that much leverage is going to be a challenge tho

Maybe make back and cooler mounting plates that mount around edges of GPU board.

With a support under outer edges of fins.. maybe pieces of wood or plastic dowel with slots cut to match fins and slide onto fins.. length would need to be accurate. or a dummy PCI card in PCI slot holding it in place to cooler.. possibly fitting over heatpipes on top of cooler??

Lexan polycarbonate sheet 2-3mm thick.. same thickness of PCI card would be good because it can be bent 90 degrees in a sheet metal brake.. so could be made to fit into motherboard PCI slot and between fins to pipes or over top of cooler with holes to go over pipes.

Finally a thread about this! I have been thinking about this too, it would make GPU's so quiet. I wish companies would design motherboards for it with pci slot in the right angle and suport brackets for card and cooler. This is possible in large cases no doubt, but I won't do it as long there isn't a clean setup ready available.

Companies won't do it though as everything moves towards smaller. I am all for smaller as long as it doesn't mean louder. But for smaller and more quiet or equally quiet we need high end GPU's with peak power consumption of 100 watt. When will this happen? 20nm parts will set a step in the right direction I think.

I remember seeing a 680 with an insane dual heatsink from a chinese company, passive. But I don't think they released it.

do keep in mind even giant tower heatsinks like a phantek is still only rated for somewhere around 160 to 180 watts. a far cry from the 250w GPU like a GTX 780. it WILL significantly reduce the noise signature to almost silent, however you wont be able to do any kind of push/pull setup due to weight limitations. (unless you are implementing some exotic zip tie solution

)

I have to wonder about the rating system. MK-26 has same or less pipe length and not as much fin area as Macho 120.

Wish I had a power hungry GPU and Macho 120 to play with.

Have a Macho HR-02 but think it's too big to fit.. and don't have a GPU to test on anyway.

With GPU I could try AXP-100 but that would be blowing/sucking air toward/away from GPU face, not front to back.

There is no real "rating system"
The MK-26 is essentially a cut off Prolimatech Genesis and it's rated at 320W, and its the most capable GPU cooler ever btw....

Therefore a Phanteks 14PE would be the best heatpipe VGA cooler by a good margin.

It definately would make for a fun mod, but if you are going to put all that work into it you might as well just go water and get way better cooling.

(plus you need to think about VRM cooling too)
