Ive been playing diablo 3, got to lvl 35 with a demon hunter. I played diablo 2 a little and diablo 1 a little, but never finished either.

I was curious, what has made diablo 3 so much less popular than 2? From what i see people played diablo 2 like forever! and people seem alot less satisfied with 3.

hm.... the diversity of farming...
e.g. for the best shoulder, give me an example other than vile ward?
for the best farming location, give me an example other than Chapter3?
for the map, give me an example that you never know which direction is the right one?

and what if you spent 10 hrs farming and get a nice gear, however, I spent 10USD and get a better one in 1min? that's the key...

Ahh ok, i don't know the game that well, so it sounds like some basic design differences? I see they're closing the auction house, that didn't work out too well!

I miss the gothic look of the first 2 personally. They were quite distinct and gave a very strong impression and vibe to the whole thing along with the music and characters.

the problem is... those who are left STILL playing the game are pretty much dependent on the AH now. removing the AH at this point is just getting rid of the people who are still playing the game

those who did not like the AH didn't really leave because of the AH. the AH is just one of the reasons why they left. the game needs some SERIOUS redesigning to bring people back. from what i hear about the PTR so far, they aren't really bringing the FUN back into the game. they are just making the game more and more of a chore to play.

What makes Diablo 3 less desirable? Rose-tinted glasses mainly.

The big difference between Diablo 2 and 3 is that in 2 you only farmed bosses for loot and did 5 minute Baal runs compared to having to spend more time actually playing through the act in Diablo 3 for your loot. There's a huge emphasis on a handful of stats that actually matter and that's the only thing adding value to your trades or character. Diversity of build kind of falls apart when you just stack crit damage, crit chance, and attack speed.

PTR changes are getting the game somewhat closer to what people feel it needs to be, there's more legendary drops and any legendary in the game can drop at the character's level. First boss kills result in a guaranteed legendary drop and the overall drop chance is a bit higher. Some of the new legendary items add a little more room for sub-optimal builds to be competitive, hopefully the expansion fixes this.

Find a friend or three and play the game without touching the auction house. Doing this with a friend of mine really changed my view on the game, having drops that often feel like upgrades and not one-shotting everything below level 50 is a blast.

Crafted shoulders are ages better than Vile Wards?
Acts 2, 3, and 4 are comparable?
Majority of the locations for quest related items: Khazra Den, Kulle's blood?

The main issue with the AH is everyone's need for instant gratification and willingness to throw money at the wall to get it. None of them seem to realize that the AH was an entirely optional feature and that the 10 hours farming is actually playing the game just like they did in Diablo 2.

I think if they came out as different games at the same time they would be on par with each other. The problem with Diablo III is it's not BETTER than diablo 2, and given that it came out so many years later with much more potential being the same as Diablo II is about the worst thing it could do. I played 1400 hours of Diablo 3, I don't hate it, but it wasn't the next step in ARPG's like it could have been ( and should have been ). When half the people are disappointed on launch the community slow disappears. My friends quit early on, and now I feel less incentive to play. Blizzard should have wait till it was the most innovative and obvious next step in the ARPG world.

Sadly I don't think there is any better out there either. Played PoE, TL2, ect. Someday I will get my ARPG dream....

Yah that seems to be a trend in alot of modern games. They look alot better but they don't move things forward, and sometimes they move them backwards due to the additional demands a good looking 3d game brings.

I really enjoyed dark souls as an action rpg, you may enjoy it, takes some getting used to. but i had incredible fun doing the coop!

Thats not the only reason why D3 failed so hard, there was overall far less shrines scattered around, map zones arent randomly generated at all, the freedom to explore in each zone feels like 70% less when compared to D2, which by the way, still has massive zones. There is less lootable interactions, such as less dead corpses, no lifting up rocks, very few weapon and armor racks, not nearly as many caverns as D2, no real diversity in different enemies, its just so terribly bad.

Stick to Diablo 2: + LoD
