Power usage and TDP.

L = Thermal design power (expected power draw with a 100% CPU load running normal software) of 60 watts or less. These are the "low voltage" chips.

E = TDP of 80 watts. Intel refers to the Xeon 5500/5600s with this letter prefix as the "basic" line and as a result, the idle power draw on these chips is frequently worse than any of the other series of chips, despite the other chips possibly having a higher full-load power draw.

X = TDP of 95 watts. These are the "premium" mainstream chips as their TDP is not so excessive that they are difficult to cool in a rack server, yet their idle power consumption is far lower than the E-series chips.

W = TDP of 130 watts and higher. These are the fastest, hottest Xeons made and they are designed to be used in workstations and pedestal servers with better cooling than an average 1U or 2U rack server.

No problem. I use L for file servers and X for workstations. Never really wanted to pay the premium for an E that could run with an X.

It all sound so damn crazy when I read it back to myself.

No reason to make multiple threads about this.

Regardless, L5520 is my recommendation. Stay away from anything below that (L5420, for example, as they don't have hyperthreading). Your only other option (I believe) would be the L5639 which has a lower clock speed, but 2 more cores.

Price to performance, L5520 all day. I run a pretty heavy workload on my home equipment, and the L5520s aren't breaking a sweat. L5639 would be useful if you were virtualizaing tons of low RAM VMs that had a function that used a lot of CPU, which is pretty unlikely in a home environment.

My apologies for multi threads.

Now with the ram on the C1100s how easy is it to upgrade if I need more? Just like a normal computer you drop it in there?
Price difference for example on the L5520 wth 24gb is $430 and the 72gb model being $600 so $ 170...

I set of 24gb seems like $120 with listings of 16gb for $100..
I dont know if I need to start out on the high end as I may never use it but I guess I get the best value if I buy it from the start?

Maybe start at 36gb of ram for $460?

I see the L5639 is the Hex.. Yea theres a nice premium on those bad boys.. ($300) may not be worth it as I highly doubt I will have that much going on..

What do you guys think?

I'm down to 1 C1100 now, and I bought it with 36GB of RAM. The thing to watch out for with the 36GB RAM postings on eBay, is that some come with 18 x 2GB DIMMs, while others come with 9 x 4GB DIMMs. If it has 18 2GB DIMMs, you have no room for expansion because you will have to replace DIMMs, not add. Since these servers support tri-channel RAM, mine has 6 DIMMs in one bank, and 3 DIMMs in the other bank. I bought 3 additional DIMMs of 4GB matching RAM for ~$10 each, so now I have 48GB RAM total and 12 DIMMs populated. I can add up to 6 more 4GB DIMMs for ~$60, and have 72GB of RAM, but I just have no reason to at this time.

If you think you will expand, look for listings of 36GB that specify 9 DIMMs of 4GB (or message the seller), or get the 48GB model, which will have 12 x 4GB DIMMs. I'm 99% sure that all the 24GB models have 12 x 2GB DIMMs.

Thanks for the advice.. This seller uses 4gb for the 24gb and 72gb
Memory RDIMM ECC DDR3 1066Mhz 24GB (6 x 4GB)

Hey seems to list every model and variation, and probably is one of the people that set the price.. If I look long enough maybe I will find someone looking to dump them and save some cash, but he seems reliable if thats the way I want toend up going..

Heres his posting

Hows he look to you? That is what I want (more of less depending on the ram)

I should be able to host a few Minecraft and TS servers on 24..

It is much more cost effective to spend the extra $170 off the bat as I check ebay listings and more ram sticks are going for $20 a stick of 4gb
This is the ram that they listed on the specs of the unit Samsung M393B5170EH1. It did say or equal.. I dont know this type of ram.. Is there cheaper?

lextecny2012 is where most of my C1100s came from (I've had at least 12 in the past year, seriously), and have no problem buying from him.

With RAM prices currently, yes it may be cheaper to buy the larger 72GB model. Back on 10/27/13, I bought 3 "Crucial 4GB 2Rx4 PC3-10600R ECC Registered CT51272BB1339" for $29.97, which is about the price of 1 of those now. RAM prices fluctuate, which is why I jumped on the three that I ordered.

Seems like I have a good handle on at least the buying part.. the next part will actually get it all working...

I appreciate your help!

If you dont mind I am going to shoot you a PM with some specific questions that are too far off topic to ask here.
Then I will try to leave you alone
