Our goals
Our main focus is on how things move rather than how things look on the screen. We aim to bring our expertise in real time soft-body physics and soft-body physics model design to the forefront of game physics simulation, making available the technology and know-how to as a wide an audience as possible. To achieve this, we are designing the engine and corresponding assets, so as to be independent of the underlying game engine and Operating System.
Right now the physics engine is running on a multicore CPU configuration, but we are also in the process of supporting GPUs via OpenCL.
Our mission
To have realistic, accurate, destructible and malleable physics everywhere. To make anything possible.
(I am not a member of the dev team)

For those that aren't currently following the development of this game:

The pre-Race update is the first major update for the game. It noticeably improves performance, includes additional features, implements a better UI, and fixes a lot of bugs (see update info link above).
Originally slated to be just one big (Race) update, the small, 4 member dev team decided they'd split it into one major update and then get the ball rolling with smaller updates. The next updates are to be a new map to coincide with the upcoming racing/ai system, as well as a beautiful semi truck to break the race up. : ) There are obviously many more updates and features to come and the forum is already full of community made levels, mods, vehicles, and more.
The game has been Green-lit by Steam.

I don't get it... that video is old, saw it ages ago.

What is this "race" they keep talking about too... I mean, what is the game etc... I was under the impression they were just building an engine?

Right now it's just an alpha and just a sandbox. It's based on Torque3D - was based on CryEngine but they switched over. The game is a softbody physics simulator... the Race update will implement a racing system so it'll temporarily be a racing/sandbox game I guess. They plan to implement a career mode and the details aren't all too clear - as said it is in alpha and they switched over to Torque3D a year or so ago and had to backtrack a bit to get it going again. I'd assume it'll be like TOCA+FlatOut but with Gran Turismo/Forza quality racing and much better damage detail. IMO if you like to crash cars into things it's very much worth the $15 (I think that's what it costs still)... there is AI, but it's limited. The official AI (which will be improved with the racing system) is currently limited to chase and flee (from the player) so demolition derby. I believe the only community mod for it is for the AI to drive straight.
TL;DR: The game (in alpha) is currently a sandbox.

EDIT: And yes the video is old. I'll update as soon as I find a post update one... update came out about 14hr ago so it may be a while.
EDIT2: New video : ) But there's not an official one yet.

I'm not sure how they'll ever make a fully fledges game out of this without significant financial backing.

I'm already playing next car game and looking forward to what they are going to do with their damage engine!

There are plenty of people who've already bought alpha. They've already got the damage physics going here.
BTW: This is by the people behind Rigs of Rods which was completely free.

Thanks. Had forgotten about this but defantly got my $15 worth with just crashing all the cars millions of times. Be interesting to see how much its changed.

Post update it ran smoother despite I had no OC (was and will be 4GHz), it defaulted to high settings after update, and I had another program eating ~25% of the cpu. Set up demo derby with moonhawks before work

I hadn't looked at that game in a while but was going to retort with how Drive is better... but now that I have it in my steam cart and am typing one handed to pull my wallet out... yea it looks pretty damn awesome! FlatOut was amazing... can't say no to this.

I do recommend trying the Drive demo... if crashing cars is your thing, it simulates damage in real time. Pause button makes for awesome screenshots. The demo currently runs on the older version of the engine and isn't nearly as optimized as the current build, but it's still worth a shot.

Thanks for making me spend money on another game....
