I wanted to build a new rig for a friend of mine and thought about using a case that where the HDD mounts directly to a metal frame cage so it would hold there with the four screws. It would be tight and secure. How important is it to have some kinda of anti vibration screw/rubber mounts ? They say it's for vibration but if it's securely fastened why would it vibrate anyway ?

They sell plenty of cases without anti vibration mounts and most prebuilts I've seen don't have them either. So do we really need them does it make the HDD's last longer ?
 
For 1-4 HDDs on single frame, I wouldn't worry.

If you have something like 10 HDDs in a machine, then it becomes more important (but not critically so).
 
The vibrations can damage the platter of the hard disk - I believe the vibrations cause the bearings between the platter and the motor to wear out more.
Nothing to worry about - the drives will be fine.

Do you want a drive recommendation aswell?
 
Seagate has said that shock mounts can slow the seek rate because their drives can detect this.

If you get shock mounts, be sure any screws won't gradually loosen and possibly fall out from vibration. That can happen if grommets and regular screws are use; you need shoulder screws, where the smooth part of the shaft is a much bigger diameter than the threaded part.
