Im looking into buying one of these two TVs as monitors. But i have heard TVs only run 4k (or 3.75K) AT 30 FPS,

Is 30hz good enough for things like multiple word documents, and pdfs etc on one screen? and will these TVs run 4k at 60fps via a hdmi 2.0 cabe (there is no display port in)
As for gaming i will run all games at 1080p so that should run at 60 fps, right?

Whatever the lowest common denominator is will be how it functions. Your graphics card has to have HDMI 2.0 as well which I'm not sure if the new Nvidias do or not since I haven't looked into them.

If you want to feel what 30 hz feels like, set a custom resolution with 30 hz.

Personally, I would avoid it.

Seiki has a 40" that does 30hz 4k cheaper than both of those, and sometime Q1 we should see a SeikiPro version that will do 60hz. There is a Phillips 40" that does 4k 60hz, but its not available in the US right now.

If you want large format and 4k 60 hz THIS is as close as you get with a TV But you will need a 970/980 for the HDMI 2.0

it depends on your monitor also. .. many monitors wont even do 30hz. If you want to try check out CRU by toastyx. Its a good utility for this type of thing.

There is not a proper adapter on the market.

4:2:0 subsampling is garbage for desktop.

The LG I linked is the smallest of the few TVs @49" with HDMI2 confirmed 4:4:4 60hz 4k. But I would really wait a few more months for the SeikiPro monitors at 40", they will have DP which will work with the 7970, and be considerably cheaper.

4:4:4

4:2:0

It looks like text would suffer more. Although you lose color accuracy of 4:4:4 you gain 60 frames per second video media.

As a PC monitor this would be undesirable but for movies and gaming it would be hard to see unless looking for it.

How many of you thing that 30hz would actually be bad, i'm talking about 4k at 30hz for word processing etc, I would just need four windows open at each corner, and would the text be hard to read?

(I'm definitely going to play with 1080p only, as my gpu would die under 4k ultra gaming.)

To me, 30hz desktop is tolerable. Ive used 30hz 4k for desktop quite a bit. It even seems okay for watching netflix etc. Even when your used to a faster refresh rate you can adapt if your patient. People often say input lag is too much, but I also dont think they take in the fact its 4 times more pixels over 1080p. And by that alone mouse movement is slowed also.

it really comes down to personal use and tolerance. You either have to try it or not. At the end of the day you are different from me and everyone else in this thread. I think people have made good recommendations in this thread.

The issue would be mouse responsiveness, web page scrolling, draging, or anything moving by your input. Coupled with inherent input lag on TVs, you are looking at an ugly mousing experience. If you can deal with that, with a 40" or larger as a desktop monitor, scaling wont be an issue.

If you cant work with toasty's custom resolution utility, then try playing a game that allows you to set a frame rate cap. If you have borderlands prequel, there is an option to set a frame cap. It would be a good example of the benefit of 60>30 in a FPS.

Edit: In the defense of 30FPS, most cinema is displayed at 24FPS.

Is there a mode on 4K TVs to make them run in a 1080p mode at 60 frames? Because if he's gaming at 1080p then the 4K resolution is pointless. My LG TV has a gaming mode which cuts out all image processing and allows for less noticeable input lag. Is there any 1080p gaming mode for a 4K TV?

My understanding is he would like 4k for desktop use, 1080p for gaming as his system isn't up to taking on 4k gaming. 4k as a desktop is far from useless if your in need for more desktop space. Having one monitor/tv that provides both 4k and 1080p might be an advantage over multiple monitors. If you can emulate a hdtv 1080p signal the HDTV may upscale 1080 to 4k quality. There are a ton of 4k tvs on the market now. I would assume one of them has a feature like gaming mode.

As a personal experience with my 4k 30hz panels they are better at 1080p than my 27inch viewsonic monitors. The blacks are deeper and whites brighter and even at 39 inches the 1080p scaling is on par or slightly better than my 27inch viewsonics. I have seiki panels so I can run true 120hz or lower refresh rates. Ive tried to see about using my viewsonic monitors along with my seiki panels and they are just to vastly different for my liking. Not the size but the image quality. Of course im comparing different panel types too.
